Background

Sidharth Rao was an Indian digital-advertising entrepreneur best known for co-founding WebChutney in 1999. Business Today described WebChutney as one of India’s first major digital agencies, later acquired by Dentsu in 2013. Rao led WebChutney for more than two decades and, in July 2021, was appointed global CEO of Dentsu McGarrybowen.

After leaving Dentsu, Rao co-founded Punt Partners with serial entrepreneur Madhu Sudhan in 2022. The new company was positioned around India’s growing marketing-technology opportunity. Storyboard18 reported that Rao saw untapped potential in martech and was focused on hiring the right talent and building another entrepreneurial venture after WebChutney.

Rao was also active as an early supporter of founders and internet startups. He was one of the first investors in ScoopWhoop, after discovering the side project while its founders were still connected to Dentsu WebChutney. Storyboard18 also documented his support for NetworkPlay in 2008 and WebChutney’s incubation of AlooTechie in 2005.

Rao died on April 21, 2023, after a fatal cardiac arrest at his home in Karjat. Business Today reported that he was 43 and survived by his wife and parents.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Rao’s investing and founder support appear to have centered on India’s early internet, digital media, advertising, and martech ecosystem.
  • He backed founders very early, before institutional validation: ScoopWhoop was still a side project when he became one of its first investors.
  • He valued founder trust and long-term mentorship. Storyboard18 described him as a “serial investor not just in companies but in people.”
  • He supported creative entrepreneurs emerging from the WebChutney ecosystem; Rao said his legacy was the people who had worked with him and then “ventured out on their own to achieve entrepreneurial ambitions.”
  • His later operating focus at Punt Partners was martech, specifically the underdeveloped opportunity in India’s marketing-technology segment.

Notable Investments

  • ScoopWhoop — Indian digital media and entertainment company; Rao was one of its first investors before Bharti SoftBank invested in 2014.
  • NetworkPlay — Advertising startup founded by Rammohan Sundaram; Storyboard18 reported Rao supported it in 2008 with a Rs 65 lakh commitment for three months and office space.
  • AlooTechie — Startup and internet-industry editorial platform; Storyboard18 reported it was incubated by WebChutney in 2005.
