Background
Søren Lemonius is a Managing General Partner and one of the three co-founders of Sunstone Life Science Ventures, an independent European venture-capital firm founded in 2007 and based in the Copenhagen area. Within the partnership he has a particular focus on investor relations and on the firm's therapeutics investments. Sunstone manages roughly €500 million across a series of funds and is one of the larger dedicated life-science investors in the Nordic region.
Before moving into venture capital, Lemonius spent roughly 18 years in corporate management at R&D-intensive companies. He served as Chief Technology Officer at Danionics, an electronic-component company, where he helped scale the business from a private, venture-backed firm of about 30 employees into a publicly listed company with more than 300 employees. He also worked as an Innovation Manager at FOSS Analytical, a Danish food-diagnostics company.
Lemonius holds a master's degree in Experimental Cell Biology from the University of Southern Denmark. He is also engaged in the wider Danish investment community, serving as a board member and a member of the Venture Capital Committee of Active Owners Denmark (the Danish private-equity and venture-capital association).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests almost exclusively in life-science therapeutics — novel drugs for human disease — with noted emphasis on specialty pharmaceuticals, orphan-drug indications, and oncology.
- Enters at the early stage (pre-clinical through Phase I), typically via Series A and B rounds, often co-leading syndicates alongside other specialist life-science funds.
- Looks for solid in-vivo preclinical data and a well-understood mechanism of action rather than early concepts.
- Explicitly prioritizes companies with a clear exit strategy, on the firm's stated view that most value in life sciences is realized through M&A (and secondarily IPOs).
- Operates a partnership / active-owner model, providing not just capital but strategic guidance through the complexities of drug development — consistent with Lemonius's own operating background scaling a company to IPO.
