Background

Stefan Bird is a longtime energy-industry executive with more than 30 years of experience. He holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Kansas State University. Early in his career he worked at Koch Industries subsidiaries in the U.S. and internationally, and he co-founded one of the first power-trading companies in America. He joined what is now Berkshire Hathaway Energy in January 1998, where he spent roughly 25 years in C-level positions across multiple subsidiaries — including Vice President of Acquisitions and Development (supporting a reported ~$5 billion acquisition pipeline) and President & CEO of CalEnergy, which operated geothermal, natural-gas cogeneration, and minerals assets.

Bird joined PacifiCorp in January 2007 as senior vice president of commercial and trading, and in March 2015 he was appointed President & CEO of Pacific Power, PacifiCorp's retail division serving roughly 735,000–800,000 customers across Oregon, Washington, and California. During his tenure he expanded PacifiCorp's renewable portfolio from under 100 MW to more than 7,000 MW, oversaw permitting and construction of 630+ miles of interstate transmission, and championed the California ISO's Western Energy Imbalance Market, which the company credits with saving Western customers over $5 billion in its first nine years. He retired from Pacific Power on January 2, 2024.

Following his retirement from PacifiCorp, Bird became President at BrightNight, a clean-power developer, where he leads U.S. commercial functions including origination, market analytics, marketing, and communications. He also serves on the Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech) Board of Trustees (term July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2030; FF&A and Executive Committee member), confirmed by the Oregon Senate. In his PacifiCorp years he chaired the PacifiCorp Foundation, the STEM Investment Council, and the CTE-STEM Employer Coalition, and served as a director of the Oregon Business Council.

Note on the "Angel Investor / Co-Chairman and Director / Seed Round" characterization: Research did not surface evidence that Stefan Bird operates as an angel/seed investor or as a "Co-Chairman and Director" of an angel-investing firm. His verified profile is that of a senior energy-utility executive and, more recently, an executive at renewable developer BrightNight. Founders should treat the angel-investor framing with caution absent direct confirmation.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • No publicly stated personal angel/seed investment thesis was found. Bird's professional focus is on developing, financing, and operating renewable and conventional power generation and transmission at utility/developer scale.
  • Areas of demonstrated expertise where he could add value: renewable energy project development (solar, geothermal, wind), power trading and wholesale markets, transmission and grid infrastructure, regulated-utility strategy, and Western U.S. energy markets (CAISO / Western EIM).
  • His track record centers on large-scale capital deployment and M&A (e.g., supporting a multi-billion-dollar acquisition pipeline at Berkshire Hathaway Energy) rather than early-stage venture checks.

Notable Investments

  • No verifiable startup portfolio companies or angel/seed deals were found for Stefan Bird.
  • His most relevant "deals" are corporate/utility-scale initiatives: expanding PacifiCorp's renewable generation past 7,000 MW, 630+ miles of new interstate transmission, and CalEnergy geothermal/gas cogeneration assets. These are operating/development achievements, not venture investments.
