Background
Stefanus Ade Hadiwidjaja is one of Indonesia's most prominent institutional investment executives, with a career spanning management consulting, private equity, and sovereign wealth. He holds an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, which he attended as a Fulbright-Sampoerna Scholar, and a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from Universitas Pelita Harapan. He began his career in consulting and technology roles, including a Territory Services Leader position at IBM Indonesia and consulting stints at firms such as Arghajata and Skha Consulting, followed by a period as a Project Leader / consultant at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where he served clients in financial services and telecommunications.
From roughly 2013 to 2021, Stefanus was Managing Director and Country Head of Indonesia and Singapore at Creador, a leading Southeast Asian private equity firm, where he also sat on the firm's Investment Committee. He led and executed investments across healthcare, consumer, and financial services, and was known for hands-on value creation — including serving as CEO and board member of investee companies (for example, CEO of Simba Indosnack from roughly 2016–2020). His most notable Creador deal was Medikaloka Hermina, a hospital operator that later went public via IPO.
In 2021 he became the founding Chief Investment Officer of the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA), the country's sovereign wealth fund, where he oversaw investments primarily in digital infrastructure, technology, and healthcare. Under his leadership, INA deployed an estimated US$3–4 billion in capital over its first few years, co-investing alongside major global institutions such as ADIA and GIC.
In early 2025, Stefanus was among senior INA executives moved into leadership at Danantara Indonesia, the government's new state investment holding company, where he serves as Managing Director, Investment. His trajectory — BCG to Creador to INA to Danantara — makes him a central figure in Indonesia's institutional and state-backed investment landscape.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Favors minority stakes that support entrepreneurs — in his words: *"We prefer minority deals where we support entrepreneurs...they are more open to private equity than before."*
- Emphasizes "smart capital" — strategic guidance, regional network access, organizational strengthening, and data-driven systems — rather than passive financial investment
- At Creador, focused on mid-market Indonesian companies with check sizes of roughly US$20–70M (up to ~US$100M) from a ~US$550M fund
- Sector concentration in healthcare (notably hospital operators), consumer, and financial services; at INA/Danantara expanded into digital infrastructure and technology
- Hands-on, operational approach — willing to take CEO and board seats to drive value creation and turnarounds
- At the sovereign-fund level, prioritizes large-scale, co-investment structures with global partners (ADIA, GIC) across infrastructure and strategic sectors
Notable Investments
- Medikaloka Hermina — Indonesian hospital network; a "complex" Creador deal (10+ doctor shareholders) that later IPO'd, a signature exit
- Simba Indosnack — consumer snack company where he served as CEO (~2016–2020) as part of Creador's value-creation approach
- Creador Indonesia portfolio — ~8 Indonesian companies plus several businesses expanding into Indonesia during his tenure, across consumer/healthcare/financial services
- INA investments — US$3–4B+ deployed in digital infrastructure, technology, and healthcare, co-investing with ADIA and GIC (2021–2025), including real estate and logistics platforms
