Background

Stephen (Steve) C. Cook has been active in investment and merchant banking since 1973, when he began his career at the Bank of Boston. He earned an A.B. with honors in Economics from Princeton University and an M.B.A. with honors in Finance from Harvard Business School. Earlier in his career he served as Senior Vice President, Director, and Co-Head of the Corporate Finance Department at Rotan Mosle, Inc., a leading Houston-based regional investment bank that merged with Paine Webber in 1983.

After co-founding and leading a leveraged-buyout and structured-finance firm for six years, Cook founded Fieldstone Partners in 1990. The Houston-based firm provides strategic growth advisory, capital sourcing, operations advisory, and strategic consulting, working with companies from early-stage ventures through maturity. Over his career of more than 40 years, Cook has completed more than 500 advisory and financing assignments; Fieldstone reports having helped launch, lead, finance, invest in, and operate more than 250 successful transactions aggregating over $7 billion in value.

Beyond advisory work, Cook is an active board member and investor. He is Lead Outside Director of Primoris Services Corporation (NASDAQ: PRIM), where he chairs the Compensation Committee, and he serves as a Director of Alzeca Biosciences, BTU Research, Solid Surface Care Holdings, and VetAccel. His work reflects a blend of merchant banking, private-equity investing, and hands-on board involvement rather than passive angel check-writing.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Operates through Fieldstone Partners as a merchant bank — combining advisory (M&A, recapitalizations, capital sourcing) with direct investment and long-term board involvement.
  • Backs and advises companies across the full lifecycle, from early-stage/venture launches (e.g., Aireon, Alzeca) to established mid-market and public companies.
  • Sector-agnostic but with demonstrated depth in complex project finance (Gulf of Mexico drilling, power generation), satellite/aerospace, biosciences, and services businesses.
  • Emphasizes "unique and creative solutions to financing and strategic challenges" — favoring situations where structuring, partnerships, and long-horizon value creation matter more than a standard term sheet.
  • Values companies with the potential to become "national and worldwide leaders in their industries," consistent with the outcomes Fieldstone highlights among its clients.

Notable Investments
