Background
Stephen J. Huxley is Chief Investment Strategist, Managing Director of Research, and a Founding Partner of Asset Dedication, LLC, a San Francisco–based Registered Investment Adviser and turnkey asset management platform (TAMP) that serves financial advisors and individual investors. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, San Diego (1975) and an undergraduate degree in business and statistics from Ohio State University. For over five decades he was also a full-time, tenured Professor of Business Analytics/Decision Sciences in the School of Management at the University of San Francisco, where he taught from 1973 to 2024, covering business analytics, decision science, operations management, and the analytics of personal finance.
In 1988 Huxley won INFORMS' National Franz Edelman Award for Outstanding Achievement in Management Science — the profession's top honor — for applying operations-research and scheduling methods to patrol-officer deployment for the San Francisco Police Department. In the late 1990s he adapted that same optimization thinking to investing, developing the "asset dedication" (dedicated-portfolio / cash-flow-matching) methodology. This work culminated in the book *Asset Dedication: How to Grow Wealthy with the Next Generation of Asset Allocation* (McGraw-Hill, 2004), co-authored with J. Brent Burns. Huxley and Burns co-founded Asset Dedication to commercialize the approach; the TAMP they built now manages several billion dollars in assets.
Note on the stub label: the source data described Stephen Huxley as an "Angel Investor" investing at the "Seed Round" stage. Research does not support this — Huxley is an academically credentialed investment strategist and RIA/TAMP principal focused on public-markets retirement and income portfolios, not startup/angel equity. No evidence of seed-stage or venture angel activity was found, so the venture-style fields above are marked N/A rather than fabricated.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Champions "asset dedication" — a goals- and time-based alternative to traditional asset allocation that matches a portfolio's bond cash flows to an investor's future spending needs, then invests the remainder for growth.
- Argues for holding individual bonds over unconstrained bond funds, contending that a dedicated ladder of individual bonds better navigates rising-rate environments and reduces behavioral/sequence-of-returns risk.
- Firm delivers this through three core strategies: Defined Income Portfolio, Time-Targeted Growth Portfolio, and the proprietary Critical Path® System that links a client's financial plan to their investments.
- Core stated aim: connect "financial plans…to investments," giving retirees predictable, liability-matched income while reducing the emotional/behavioral errors that hurt long-term returns.
Notable Investments
- Not applicable in the venture/startup sense. Huxley's work concerns constructing client portfolios of individual bonds and diversified equity funds rather than making equity investments in companies. No angel or startup portfolio companies were found in public sources.
