Background

Stephen “Steve” Peacher is Executive Chair of SLC Management, Sun Life’s institutional investment management business, and is a member of the Sun Life Executive Team. SLC says he advises on global asset-management issues and contributes to Sun Life’s strategic direction.

Peacher joined Sun Life in 2009 as Chief Investment Officer. Sun Life’s 2026 management circular states that he served as President, SLC Management from January 11, 2016 to May 15, 2024, and was named Executive Chair on May 16, 2024. SLC’s own bio says he created the blueprint in 2013 for what became SLC Management and, as President, led organic and strategic growth while facilitating acquisitions of seven asset managers.

Before Sun Life, Peacher was Head of Fixed Income and Liquidity Strategies at Columbia Management. He spent more than 15 years at Putnam Investments, where he rose to Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer of the Credit Team. Earlier in his career, he worked in the investment banking division at Dean Witter Reynolds, now part of Morgan Stanley.

Peacher holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Virginia. He is a CFA charterholder and a member of the Boston CFA Society.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Peacher’s investing career is centered on institutional asset management rather than venture capital. His public track record is in building SLC Management into a global platform across fixed income, private credit, real estate, infrastructure and insurance-linked investment capabilities.
  • SLC Management says it helps clients meet “long-term income and capital appreciation objectives” through fixed income and alternative asset classes including public and private fixed income, infrastructure equity and real estate equity and debt.
  • Peacher has emphasized platform breadth and client fit. At Sun Life’s 2024 Investor Day, he said SLC had moved from separate acquired businesses toward “a more coordinated platform” designed to accelerate growth.
  • The firm’s SLC Fixed Income business focuses on investment-grade public and private fixed income, liability-driven investing and insurance asset management; Crescent adds high yield, senior secured loans, special situations and multi-asset credit; BGO adds global real estate equity/debt; InfraRed adds infrastructure equity.
  • In the U.S. retail channel, Peacher said the AAM acquisition reflected “a sustained increase in demand for alternatives from the high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth market” as investors seek new yield and total-return sources.
  • No public source found verified personal angel investments, seed-stage check sizes or a startup-founder-oriented investment thesis for Peacher individually.

Notable Investments

  • Bentall Kennedy Group — Sun Life completed the acquisition in 2015, adding North American real estate investment and property-management capabilities to Sun Life Investment Management; Peacher was quoted as President of Sun Life Investment Management and CIO of Sun Life Financial.
  • Bentall GreenOak / BGO — Sun Life announced in 2018 that it would merge Bentall Kennedy with GreenOak Real Estate, creating Bentall GreenOak, a global real estate investment platform; Peacher said the deal extended real estate investment strategies and market reach.
  • InfraRed Capital Partners — Sun Life announced in 2019 that it would acquire an 80% stake in the London-based infrastructure and real estate investment manager; Peacher described infrastructure equity as a natural extension of SLC’s solution set.
  • Crescent Capital Group — Sun Life announced in 2020 that it would acquire a 51% stake in Crescent, a global alternative credit manager with approximately US$28 billion in AUM at the time; Peacher cited Crescent’s alternative-credit track record and SLC’s goal to broaden public and private credit capabilities.
  • Advisors Asset Management — Sun Life announced in 2022 that SLC Management would acquire a 51% stake in AAM for US$214 million, making AAM SLC’s U.S. retail distribution arm for specified alternative investment products.
  • BGO and Crescent remaining interests / Bell Partners — In March 2026, Sun Life completed purchases of the remaining equity interests in BGO and Crescent and announced the acquisition of Bell Partners, a multifamily real estate investment manager.
