Background

Steve Cobb is a Senior Partner at CID Capital, an Indianapolis-area (Carmel, Indiana) private equity firm focused on the lower middle market. He joined CID in 2001 and spent much of his tenure as Managing Partner before transitioning to a Senior Partner role. Effective January 1, 2025, Eric Derheimer and Cory Heck became co-managing partners of the firm, with Cobb stepping back to focus on the existing portfolio and transition initiatives ahead of a planned December 2025 retirement.

Before private equity, Cobb was a finance manager at Procter & Gamble, where he held a variety of operational and financial roles, including finance responsibility for several P&G Home Care brands and new-product initiatives in the U.S. Fabric Care (laundry) category. Earlier in his career he worked in the Business Valuation Group of Deloitte & Touche, valuing small- and mid-cap private companies for transaction purposes. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and a bachelor's degree in economics (with honors) from DePauw University, where he was selected for the Management Fellows Honors Program.

At CID, Cobb has been an active investor in the consumer products, industrial products, and industrial services sectors, and he led the firm's consumer products investment activities. He has served as a director of portfolio companies including ABC Industries, Matilda Jane Clothing, and Salon Grafix, and is active in the Indianapolis business community, including as a past director of the Indiana chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG).

An important correction to the stub data: although Cobb's email domain (cidcap.com) and contact details are accurate, CID Capital is a control-oriented lower-middle-market buyout firm — not an angel/seed investor. Its investments are majority acquisitions of profitable, revenue-generating companies, so any framing of Cobb as a "seed-round angel" is inaccurate and founders should approach him accordingly.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Control buyouts of profitable LMM companies. CID takes majority positions in established lower-middle-market businesses; it is not a minority/growth or venture investor.
  • Financial bar: ~$10M+ revenue and $3M+ EBITDA, with roughly $10–15M of equity per platform deal and no upper limit for add-ons.
  • Deal types: management buyouts, leveraged buyouts, divestitures/carve-outs, recapitalizations, shareholder-liquidity events, and growth financing.
  • Sectors Cobb personally led: branded consumer products, plus industrial products and industrial/business services and distribution.
  • "First institutional capital" strategy: CID positions itself as the first institutional investor in founder- and family-owned companies transitioning beyond the entrepreneurial stage (per partner Eric Bruun on Fund IV).
  • Founder-friendly posture: the firm describes its approach as "collaborative," "vision-oriented," "tailored," "transparent," and "disciplined & predictable," with management teams retaining active roles in value creation.
  • In Cobb's own words on deal sourcing, retirements continuously create opportunity: *"There's, in our view, always retirements. There's no way to slow the clock. We all get older."*
