Background
Steve Hochberg has been a founder, operator, and investor in healthcare and health-technology companies for more than thirty years. His first company, Physicians' Online, was formed in 1991. He earned a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Michigan and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
In 2004 he co-founded Ascent Biomedical Ventures (ABV), a New York–based venture firm investing in seed and early-stage biomedical technology companies — medical devices, biopharmaceuticals, and healthcare services/IT — where he serves as Managing Partner. ABV has backed more than 20 companies, with multiple IPOs and acquisitions among its outcomes. He was also a founding board member of what became SLR Capital (an ~$8B family of BDCs / SLR Investment Corp).
Since 2013, Hochberg has been a Partner at Deerfield Management, a major healthcare investment firm, where he focuses on structured transactions in Deerfield's private funds across seed, growth, and late-stage MedTech, HealthTech, and services companies. He launched Deerfield's first SPAC in 2017, which led to the formation of AdaptHealth (AHCO), and co-led two health/medtech incubators.
In 2022 he co-founded Triatomic Capital, a technology-focused venture firm (alongside former Google/Grail executive Jeff Huber and Peter Zhou) that bridges regulated healthcare systems with frontier deep tech — AI, next-generation compute, engineered biology, new materials, and energy. Beyond investing, Hochberg has held significant healthcare governance roles: he became Chairman of Continuum Health Partners in 2011 and led its 2013 merger with Mount Sinai, where he now serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of the Mount Sinai Health System. He also sits on the board of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests primarily at seed and early stage, with the ability to follow on through growth and late stage via Deerfield and Triatomic platforms.
- Core domain expertise is healthcare and biomedical technology — medical devices, drugs/biopharma, diagnostics, and healthcare services/IT.
- Through Triatomic, broadens into applied AI and deep tech for "physical-world and life-science problems," targeting "century-defining themes": next-gen compute, the automated economy, new materials, engineered biology, and new energy.
- Check sizes at Triatomic range from $100K up to $25M, spanning early-to-growth stages.
- Distinctive angle: pairs deep operating/governance experience inside regulated health systems (Mount Sinai) with frontier-tech investing — an unusual bridge between healthcare incumbents and startups.
- Looks for founder-led teams building infrastructure-level technology rather than consumer-facing applications.
