Background

Steve Moak is a Scottsdale, Arizona serial entrepreneur, addiction-recovery advocate, and angel investor whose ventures cluster around behavioral health and drug-and-alcohol testing. Earlier in his career he held direct-marketing and management roles with Directel/American Express, NCR Corporation, and Avon Products before moving into the diagnostics business. In 2004 he acquired First Check Diagnostics, a California maker of at-home drug tests, built out its product line, and sold the company to Inverness Medical in 2007 (reported at roughly $25 million) — the deal that established him as a diagnostics operator.

In 1999, Moak co-founded the Arizona nonprofit notMYkid with his wife Debbie Moak after two of their children struggled with drug use; the organization delivers youth and family substance-abuse prevention and education programs, and Moak has served as founder and chairman of its board. His own decades-long battle with addiction and recovery is central to his public identity: he hosts the "The Unlicensed Counselor" podcast on the behavioral-health industry and speaks widely on recovery. In 2010 he ran as a Republican candidate in Arizona's 3rd Congressional District primary (FEC candidate ID H0AZ03396).

Moak later founded True Mobile Health, a technology-assisted care platform for treatment centers and sober-living homes, which he built after walking out of a treatment facility convinced there needed to be a new model of aftercare. In October 2020 True Mobile Health rebranded as ShareTek — an at-home diagnostics company offering remote, DNA-matched drug and alcohol testing — and appointed former Arizona DCS director Greg McKay as CEO. The business now operates under the WeShareTek name, where Moak is listed as Chairman & CEO. He also runs the investment vehicle Benevolent Ventures and is a co-founder of Easy Sheets.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as an angel/individual, typically at the seed stage, consistent with the stub data and his Crunchbase "Angel/Individual" classification.
  • Focus tracks his operating expertise: behavioral health, addiction recovery, remote/at-home diagnostics, and digital-health / technology-assisted care — the same categories his own companies (First Check, True Mobile Health, ShareTek/WeShareTek) address.
  • Values founders with authentic, mission-driven connection to the problem; his own companies were built out of personal experience with addiction and recovery, and he repeatedly frames technology as something that should "put people first."
  • Arizona-rooted, with deep local nonprofit and startup networks (notMYkid, Arizona recovery community).

Notable Investments

  • WEconnect Health Management — behavioral-health / addiction-recovery support platform (listed among his angel investments).
  • Easy Sheets — co-founder.
  • Benevolent Ventures — his own investment/holding entity through which he backs early-stage companies.
  • First Check Diagnostics — acquired 2004, sold to Inverness Medical in 2007 (his own operating exit, reported ~$25M).
