Steve Royer

Stephen Royer is Chairman and a Partner of Shamrock Capital Advisors, the Los Angeles–based private equity firm originally founded as the investment vehicle of the Roy E. Disney family. Royer joined Shamrock in 1991, and since 1998 he has managed the firm's private equity investment activities. When Shamrock became independent of the Disney family office in 2010, he took on responsibility for the firm's day-to-day operational activities. Before Shamrock, he worked as an investment banker at Lehman Brothers.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Quantitative Economics from Stanford University (1986) and an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management (1991), where he was a Venture Fellow.

In July 2025, Shamrock announced a leadership transition in which Royer moved from President & Partner to Chairman & Partner, while longtime partners Michael LaSalle and Andrew Howard were promoted to Co-President & Partner. Announcing the changes, Royer said, "I am very happy and proud to be announcing the well-deserved promotions of Mike and Andy to Co-Presidents." The firm manages roughly $6.5 billion in assets across its private equity, growth, and content (IP/royalty) strategies — the latter being the fund that famously acquired Taylor Swift's master recordings in 2020.

Over his career Royer has served on numerous portfolio company boards. He is currently a director of Branded Cities and oversees Shamrock's investments in Canopy Spectrum and Omega Wireless, and has held board seats at Wpromote and Maple Media. His prior (now-exited) board roles include Mobilitie, INgrooves Music Group, Screenvision Media, Consilio, Learfield Communications, Media Storm, RealD, TeleGuam Holdings, Modern Luxury, Triad Broadcasting Company, PortalPlayer, PRN, and NETGEAR.

• Invests through institutional private equity funds — control buyouts and growth equity, not angel or seed checks.
• Concentrates on a deep vertical focus in media, entertainment, communications, and marketing/advertising, where Shamrock looks "to identify companies with untapped intrinsic value or companies capitalizing on emerging trends."
• Targets sub-sectors including digital marketing (Wpromote), out-of-home/advertising infrastructure (Branded Cities, Screenvision), wireless/communications infrastructure (Mobilitie, Canopy Spectrum, Omega Wireless), music and content (INgrooves), media services, and consumer/enterprise tech.
• As Co-President Andrew Howard framed the firm's approach: "We operate in dynamic sectors that are constantly evolving" — Shamrock leans on sector specialization rather than generalist sourcing.
• Operates with a long-hold, operationally engaged style; Royer typically takes board seats and works directly with management on value creation.
