Background
Steven R. Boal is a serial founder and Wall Street veteran best known for creating Coupons.com, which he founded in 1998 (originally incorporated as X Advantage Corp.) to bring the multi-billion-dollar newspaper-circular couponing industry into the digital age. He led the company through a $100 million IPO on the NYSE in 2014 (ticker COUP) and renamed it Quotient Technology, Inc. (NYSE: QUOT) in 2015. Boal served as CEO and Chairman, stepped back to the board in 2017, and returned as CEO in 2019, succeeding Mir Aamir. He led Quotient until departing around 2022; the company was later acquired by Neptune Retail Solutions.
Before Coupons.com, Boal built a career in financial technology. He was Vice President and head of Global Emerging Markets Derivative Technology at J.P. Morgan, Vice President of Business Development at Integral Development Corporation (a Silicon Valley financial-software firm), President of OptEdge (real-time options analytics and risk management), and held management roles at TriStar Market Data, including running its Montgomery Securities division. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the State University of New York at Albany.
Boal also co-founded CashStar in 2007 (with David Stone), a digital gift-card platform for retailers that was acquired by Blackhawk Network in 2017 for a reported $175 million; he served as its Founder and Chairman. Since 2022 he has served as CEO and Chairman of the Board of Matia Mobility, a Salt Lake City–area maker of robotic standing wheelchairs. He relocated to Park City, Utah, and has described leading Matia as "the most rewarding thing I've ever done in my life."
Alongside his operating roles, Boal invests as an angel in early-stage technology companies, drawing on his experience founding and scaling multiple ventures across fintech, ad-tech, and digital commerce.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as an individual/angel at seed and early stages in software-driven startups.
- Gravitates toward large, entrenched, "ripe for disruption" markets — the same lens that led him to couponing: *"I thought there had to be an easier way… the multi-billion-dollar couponing promotions industry was one that was ripe for disruption."*
- Sector interests span business/productivity and application software, ad-tech and digital privacy, and digital commerce/promotions, plus a growing conviction in AI and robotics, which he says *"present huge opportunities to solve very difficult problems."*
- Values companies that "treat shoppers with respect, provide them what they want and give them value" — a customer-first, value-delivery orientation carried over from his retail-tech career.
