Background
Steven Menking is a New York City–based economist, investor, and commentator. He graduated from Williams College in 2010 with dual Bachelor of Arts degrees — one in Mathematics & Statistics and one in Economics. He began his career on Wall Street as an investment banking analyst in the technology group at Morgan Stanley, where he worked on IPOs, M&A transactions, stock repurchases, and debt refinancings for technology companies. In roughly 2012 he moved to the buy side / trading side, joining the proprietary trading desk at SMB Capital as a short-term U.S. equities day trader.
Around 2014, Menking stepped away from full-time finance and built a second career as a private tutor and financial educator in Manhattan — coaching high school and university students (from schools such as Riverdale, Dalton, Penn/Wharton, Duke, and NYU) in mathematics, statistics, economics, accounting, and finance, as well as preparing candidates for investment banking interviews and internships. He describes himself as "a methodical, quantitative thinker" and has done instructional work in the finance-training space.
Menking began investing personally in cryptocurrencies and blockchain assets in 2016. In 2018 he co-founded Genesis Capital Management (GenCap), where he serves as Founding Partner and Director of Investment Strategy. In that role he manages a diversified portfolio of cryptocurrencies and oversees portfolio construction, trade execution, investor communications, and strategic development, positioning the fund as a compliant vehicle for investors seeking exposure to digital-asset markets.
Beyond investing, Menking is the host of the "On the Objective" podcast (ontheobjective.org), where he discusses economics, finance, philosophy, and world events through the lens of a Christian worldview. He is an active public commentator on macroeconomics, monetary policy, and digital assets.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Treats early-stage crypto/blockchain opportunities as venture-capital-style bets — his own framing: these are "early stage, with a lot of the technology that is unproven and hasn't led to mainstream adoption just yet."
- Runs a diversified cryptocurrency portfolio through GenCap rather than concentrating in a single asset, combining liquid digital-asset positions with early-stage exposure.
- Believes in the leverage inherent to a small, still-illiquid market: *"Every dollar that comes into the cryptocurrency space has a multiplied impact on market capitalization because it is so thin."*
- Complements crypto exposure with precious metals (notably silver) and mining stocks, which he views as leveraged plays on precious-metals prices — signaling a hard-money, inflation-aware macro view.
- Quantitative, first-principles approach rooted in his mathematics/economics background and investment-banking training.
Notable Investments
- Cryptocurrency & digital-asset portfolio (GenCap fund): A diversified basket of cryptocurrencies actively managed since the fund's 2018 founding; specific named token or startup positions are not publicly disclosed.
- Early-stage blockchain ventures: Menking describes allocating to unproven, early-stage blockchain technology in a venture-style manner, though individual portfolio companies are not publicly listed.
- *(No named startup equity deals or seed-round portfolio companies could be verified from public sources — GenCap's disclosed activity is centered on liquid digital assets rather than a published angel portfolio.)*
