Background
Steve Stephens has spent his entire career in Texas commercial banking. He began in 1980 in the lending officer development program at Texas Commerce Bank (now part of Chase), and over roughly a decade rose to executive vice president in commercial lending at Texas Commerce–Reagan. In 1990 he joined Walter Johnson at Southwest Bank of Texas as an executive vice president, becoming one of the founding executives of what would grow into Amegy Bank — a bank explicitly created to serve Houston businesses during the fallout of the region's 1980s energy-driven economic crisis, when national banks pulled back from lending.
Stephens was named President of Amegy Bank National Association in December 2009 and became Chief Executive Officer in March 2014. Under his leadership Amegy has grown to roughly $14 billion in assets, about 1,000 employees, and more than 75 branches (76 as of December 31, 2025) across Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, Central Texas, and San Antonio, ranking as the eighth-largest full-service commercial bank in Texas by domestic deposit market share. Amegy merged with Utah-based Zions Bancorporation in 2005; Stephens also serves as an Executive Vice President and member of the Executive Management Committee of Zions Bancorporation, N.A.
He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Houston and previously attended Texas Christian University. He is deeply embedded in Houston civic life: Board Chair of Boys & Girls Country; Chair of the United Way of Greater Houston Board of Trustees (elected May 2024, two-year term); and a board member of the Greater Houston Partnership, the Hobby Center Foundation, and Houston Methodist's President's Leadership Council. He chairs the University of Houston's Board of Visitors and the Bauer College Board, is a Senior Fellow of the American Leadership Forum, and previously served on a 2016 advisory committee for the Export-Import Bank of the United States. He is married to Anne-Laure Stephens, has four children, and keeps a farm in New Ulm, Texas.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- He is a relationship-driven commercial banker, not an equity investor. His stated philosophy centers on local decision-making, deep community ties, and financing businesses of all sizes rather than taking equity stakes.
- Backing entrepreneurs through credit. Amegy was founded to lend to Houston businesses when national banks would not; Stephens frames the bank as one that "came out of the ashes" of the 1980s crisis to support the region's rebuilders.
- Sector strengths reflect the Texas economy: energy, chemicals/petrochemicals, healthcare, and real estate, supported by treasury management and international banking services.
- In his own words: *"You can be rewarded for hard work and an entrepreneurial mindset,"* reflecting his view that Houston's economy rewards initiative and innovation.
- No documented seed/angel activity. No portfolio of startup equity investments, check sizes, or seed-stage deals could be verified for Stephens personally.
Notable Investments
- No verified startup or venture-equity investments. No angel or seed-round portfolio companies attributable to Steve Stephens were found in public sources.
- His professional "investments" are institutional and civic rather than equity-based:
- Amegy Bank — as a founding executive and CEO, grew the bank from a single ~$50 million branch to ~$14 billion in assets and 75+ Texas locations.
- Community capital — chairs the United Way of Greater Houston board and Boys & Girls Country, and sits on the Greater Houston Partnership and Hobby Center Foundation boards, directing significant philanthropic and civic resources.
