Background

Stewart Alsop is a partner at Alsop Louie Partners, the early-stage venture capital firm he formed with Gilman Louie after leaving New Enterprise Associates. Alsop Louie describes itself as an early-stage, risk-oriented technology venture firm with experience across new media, gaming, SaaS, cloud infrastructure, security, and mobile.

Before venture capital, Alsop spent roughly 20 years as a business journalist, editor, and commentator. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Occidental College in 1975, became Executive Editor of Inc. Magazine, moved to Silicon Valley as the third editor of InfoWorld in 1983, and in 1985 founded P.C. Letter. He also started the Agenda and Demo conferences and published the “Social Register to the PC Industry.”

Alsop entered venture capital in 1996 at New Enterprise Associates, where he became a general partner and led investments including TiVo, Portola Communications, Netcentives, Glu Mobile, and Xfire. From 1996 to 2003, he wrote “Alsop On InfoTech” for Fortune. He left NEA in 2005 and co-founded Alsop Louie Partners with Gilman Louie; he also served on Sonos’s board from 2006 to 2013.

More recently, Alsop has been building TK MediaTech Ventures with Jim Ward. Public filings and reporting in 2024-2025 identify TK MediaTech Ventures as a New Mexico-based seed and early-stage media-technology fund; SEC filings list Stewart Alsop II as an executive/managing member of the general partner.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Alsop Louie looks for “risky, bold ideas,” specifically “new technologies and business models, where no market presently exists.”
  • The firm says it favors “break-throughs that will reshape the status quo” and “hard technologies tackling tough problems.”
  • Alsop Louie’s stated worldview is “Venture Humanism”: backing technology that can make money while producing a better future, with more scrutiny toward technology’s social effects.
  • In a 2014 VentureBeat interview, Alsop said Alsop Louie’s focus was roughly 70% security and data analytics, with the rest aimed at companies that “disrupts the hell out of the world.”
  • In 2025, Alsop described TK MediaTech Ventures as focused on technology that changes media and entertainment, especially the “third convergence” of computing, AI, and immersive media.
  • For founder fit, Alsop says he looks for entrepreneurs who are deeply committed, have domain expertise, and “speak the language of their business, not of venture capital.”
