Background
Stuart Davidson has spent more than two decades working with and investing in early-stage technology companies. He co-founded/joined Labrador Ventures in 1995, a Palo Alto–area seed-stage venture firm that grew to over $200 million under management. Across four Labrador funds he invested in more than 100 early-stage companies and served on numerous boards, with the firm recording one IPO and dozens of acquisitions (including Pandora, Convoy, and MyPoints among firm-wide exits). His direct portfolio responsibilities at Labrador included companies such as ShotSpotter, Ustream, Ultriva, and iPV.
Before venture investing, Davidson was an operator: he founded and served as CEO of Combion, Inc., a genomics/life-sciences company acquired by Incyte (NASDAQ: INCY), and was President of Alkermes, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALKS), a biopharmaceutical company. Earlier in his career he worked at MCI Communications and at Warner Communications, where he was engaged in the development of businesses in electronic messaging, data networking, and interactive cable television.
Alongside his venture work, Davidson is a longstanding figure in impact investing. He is Chairman and co-founder of Sonen Capital, a dedicated impact investment management firm focused on generating financial returns with lasting social and environmental impact. He chaired Acumen's investment committee for more than 15 years (now Director Emeritus), was Board Chair of d.light, founding Board Chair of IDEO.org, and Vice-Chair of REDF, and is a trustee of the Woodcock Foundation.
More recently, Davidson became a Founding Partner of Avesta Fund, a Denver-based, certified B Corporation that invests exclusively in early-stage tech startups whose business models are tied to decarbonization and economic opportunity, systematically prioritizing founders from communities affected by climate change and inequality. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Stage: Pre-seed and seed; a seed-round specialist across his career at Labrador Ventures and now Avesta Fund.
- Check size: Roughly $150K–$500K at Avesta Fund; Avesta does not typically lead rounds.
- Sectors (historic, Labrador): Information services, applied materials science, software, messaging, and data/communications technology.
- Sectors (current, Avesta): Climate and energy, education, fintech, and support for under-represented founders — investing "exclusively in early-stage tech startups with business models tied to decarbonization and economic opportunity."
- Impact lens: A defining thread across Sonen Capital, Acumen, and Avesta — pursuing "financial returns with lasting social and environmental impact." Avesta operates as a public–private bridge (via Colorado's Venture Capital Authority) and uses standardized impact-verification frameworks.
- What makes him say yes: Founders in decarbonization/economic-opportunity markets, ideally from communities affected by climate change and inequality, paired with genuine early-stage technology upside.
Notable Investments
- ShotSpotter — Gunshot-detection/acoustic-sensing technology; a Labrador portfolio company Davidson was responsible for (later public as SoundThinking, NASDAQ: SSTI).
- Ustream — Live video-streaming platform (acquired by IBM in 2016); Davidson was the Labrador representative.
- Ultriva — Cloud-based supply-chain / lean manufacturing software; Labrador portfolio company under Davidson.
- iPV — Early-stage technology company in the Labrador portfolio under Davidson.
- Pandora, Convoy, MyPoints — Among Labrador Ventures' firm-wide notable outcomes/exits during Davidson's tenure (firm attribution, not confirmed as his personal deals).
- Combion, Inc. — Company he founded and led as CEO; acquired by Incyte Genomics (an operating outcome rather than an investment).
