Background
Stuart J. Rabin is the founder, President, CEO, and Chief Investment Officer of Nine Thirty Capital, a New York–based diversified investment platform he launched in 2004. The firm is a flexible, registered investment adviser that invests directly in private companies and public securities and designs and actively manages customized investment portfolios for prominent families and institutional clients around the world.
Before founding Nine Thirty Capital, Rabin co-founded Jacobson Family Investments, Inc. (JFI), where he served as President and CEO from 1997 through 2008. At JFI he constructed and actively managed sizeable bespoke portfolios spanning public-market managers and hedge funds, an internal equity trading vehicle, direct private company investments, and real estate partnerships. Earlier in his career he worked at a New York–based hedge fund, at Morgan Stanley Asset Management, and at Bear Stearns & Co. He began his professional career as a lawyer, practicing with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in New York and with Verner, Liipfert, Bernard, McPherson & Hand in Washington, D.C.
Rabin graduated with honors from Georgetown University and from the Georgetown University Law Center, and earned his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He sits on a number of corporate and nonprofit boards, including as a director of Decision Sciences International Corporation and Wolfgang Puck Worldwide. His civic and philanthropic roles include the Board of Trustees of the National Constitution Center (Philadelphia), where he has served on the Executive Committee and chaired the Programs and Exhibits Committee; the Board of Trustees of the New-York Historical Society (Executive and Investment Committees); the Columbia Presbyterian Health Sciences Advisory Council (Co-Chair, Neurosciences Committee); and the Wharton Global Family Alliance Research Council.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Operates as a diversified, multi-asset platform rather than a single-strategy fund: direct private-company stakes, public equities, and hedge fund allocations sit side by side.
- Makes direct private company investments where the firm can engage actively — Rabin frequently takes board or chairman roles (e.g., Decision Sciences, Wolfgang Puck Worldwide).
- Manages customized, bespoke portfolios for prominent families and institutions, reflecting a family-office heritage carried over from his time leading Jacobson Family Investments.
- Demonstrated appetite for medical/diagnostic and deep-tech ventures (Decision Sciences' molecular imaging/diagnostic technology) and consumer/brand businesses (Wolfgang Puck Worldwide).
- Background as both a lawyer and a multi-strategy allocator suggests a preference for thorough diligence and a hands-on, governance-oriented approach to private positions.
Notable Investments
- Decision Sciences International Corporation — molecular/diagnostic imaging and security-scanning technology company; Nine Thirty Capital participated in its Series C funding (a ~$1.06M tranche, March 2014), and Rabin serves as a director/chairman.
- Wolfgang Puck Worldwide — the celebrity-chef consumer and lifestyle brand company; Rabin holds a directorship.
- CB Insights records three disclosed investments for Nine Thirty Capital, including rounds dated October 2012 (Series B-II), September 2013 (Series C), and March 2014 (Series C-II, Decision Sciences); full details of the earlier rounds are not public.
