Background

Subhasis Chaudhuri is an Indian electrical engineer and one of the country's most prominent academic leaders in computer vision and signal processing. He earned a B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from IIT Kharagpur (1985), a master's in Electrical Engineering from the University of Calgary, Canada (1987), and a Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego (1990). He joined IIT Bombay as an Assistant Professor in 1990, became Associate Professor in 1994 and full Professor in 1998, and headed the Department of Electrical Engineering from 2005 to 2008.

Chaudhuri served as Director of IIT Bombay from April 2019 to April 2024, leading the institute through a period of significant growth in research funding and its startup/innovation ecosystem. He holds the K. N. Bajaj Chair Professorship. His research is recognized internationally in computer vision, image processing, pattern recognition, motion estimation, computational photography, computational haptics, and biomedical image analysis, with pioneering work on motion-free super-resolution and depth-from-defocus.

His honors include the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2004), the Vikram Sarabhai Research Award (2001), the G.D. Birla Award for Scientific Research (2010), and the NASI-Reliance Industries Platinum Jubilee Award (2011). He is a Fellow of the IEEE and of all three major Indian science academies (INSA, Indian Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Sciences, India), and an Alexander von Humboldt fellow.

In May 2022 he was appointed a Public Interest Director on the board of BSE Limited (the Bombay Stock Exchange), and in November 2024 — following SEBI approval on 21 November 2024 — he became Chairman of BSE's Governing Board. The "Angel Investors / Seed Round" classification attached to him in investor databases stems primarily from his institutional role steering IIT Bombay's deep-tech entrepreneurship and incubation activity rather than a personal standalone angel fund.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Operates as an institutional / ecosystem backer of early-stage deep-tech, anchored to IIT Bombay's research-to-startup pipeline (incubation, co-innovation labs, fellowships) rather than a personal angel portfolio.
  • Emphasis on hardware and frontier "sovereign" deep-tech capabilities for India — in his words, "We're not just funding startups – we're building sovereign deep-tech capabilities for India."
  • Backs ventures that can leverage institutional infrastructure: cleanroom access, GPU clusters, and PhD fellowships through IIT Bombay / IISc co-innovation labs, with a stated bias (~70%) toward hardware breakthroughs over pure software.
  • Natural sector alignment with his own expertise: computer vision, AI/ML, imaging, signal processing, biomedical and computational technologies.
  • Says yes to research-grade, founder-technologist teams with defensible IP coming out of academic R&D.

Notable Investments

  • No verified record of named personal angel/portfolio companies could be found. His startup involvement is institutional, channelled through IIT Bombay's incubation ecosystem (e.g., SINE — the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at IIT Bombay) and associated deep-tech venture initiatives during his tenure as Director (2019–2024).
  • *(No specific individually-backed deals or check-by-check angel investments are publicly documented; this section is intentionally left without fabricated entries.)*
