Background
Sunil Chandiramani is based in Hong Kong and has been on the board of Symphony International Holdings Limited since 16 February 2004. He is Chief Executive Officer of Symphony Capital Partners Limited and a director of Symphony Asia Holdings Pte. Ltd., the Singapore investment manager for Symphony International Holdings.
Chandiramani has more than 37–38 years of private equity and related investment experience across multiple sectors in Asia and the United States. His Asian private-equity career began as a partner at Arral & Partners and continued at Schroder Capital Partners, both associated with some of the early institutional private-equity activity in Asia.
Before moving into Asian private equity, he worked on leveraged buy-outs and acquisitions in the Structured Finance Group at Bankers Trust Company in New York. He holds a BCom (Hons) from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University, and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Symphony International Holdings was founded in 2004 and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2007 under ticker SIHL. The company’s structure is a permanent-capital investment vehicle, allowing it to hold investments for longer periods than a typical fixed-life private equity fund.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Symphony’s core thesis is exposure to Asia’s expanding consumer markets: the firm describes its focus as companies in high-growth sectors that benefit from “rising disposable incomes” and an increasingly aspirational Asian population.
- The firm invests primarily in healthcare, hospitality, lifestyle, branded real estate, logistics, education and new economy businesses.
- Symphony typically invests in growth capital for later-stage development and expansion, management buy-outs/buy-ins, restructurings and special situations.
- The firm may allocate a smaller portion of capital to earlier-stage opportunities where it sees a special opportunity.
- Symphony emphasizes long-term business partnerships with strong management teams and entrepreneurs, rather than quick-flip fund-cycle investing.
- As of its 2025 annual report, Symphony is operating under an updated strategy adopted in September 2023: orderly realisation of investments to maximise shareholder returns. It says it is supporting existing investee companies and positioning mature investments for exit, while not making new investments.
