Background
Sylvain Makaya is a Partner at Idinvest Partners (acquired by and integrated into Eurazeo in 2018), where he joined in December 2013. He built and leads the firm's Asset Finance department, launched alongside the Idinvest SME Industrial Assets (ISIA) Fund, an investment vehicle created in October 2017 to finance the upmarket modernization of European industrial SMEs and address their competitiveness challenges. He has also been described as Head of Corporate Development at the firm.
Before Idinvest, Makaya spent much of his career in finance leadership within private equity. He began at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture), then served as Chief Financial Officer at private equity funds Euromezzanine Partners (EMZ) and Antin Infrastructure Partners. This CFO and corporate-finance grounding shaped his focus on structured, debt-based financing rather than venture equity.
He is a graduate of EM Strasbourg Business School and Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. Beyond investing, he has taught private equity at business schools, and outside of work is an amateur boxer and triathlete.
Note on the stub data: the "Angel Investors / Seed Round" labels do not match the verifiable record. Makaya operates in private debt and asset-based/equipment finance for established SMEs, not seed-stage startup angel investing.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through private debt across three sub-segments: senior debt (bank-like SME lending), mezzanine/unitranche debt, and asset financing for industrial SMEs.
- The ISIA fund leases cutting-edge manufacturing equipment to industrial SMEs so they can boost production capacity and compete with larger corporates.
- On the appeal of private debt, in his own words it offers three advantages: "no capital intrusion," the ability to enable lease-back operations, and facilitating "acquisition-driven growth beyond traditional bank debt ratios."
- Frames SMEs as "the economic lifeblood of value creation in France and Europe," with an emphasis on regional development and ecosystem support.
- Values strong sourcing networks — on partnering with the FirmFunding platform: "A platform like FirmFunding allows us to enrich our sourcing networks and improve their quality."
Notable Investments
- Idinvest SME Industrial Assets (ISIA) Fund — flagship equipment-leasing vehicle (launched Oct 2017) financing industrial production-tool upgrades for European SMEs; backed at inception by the European Investment Bank and European Investment Fund, alongside French banks, industrials and insurers.
- Individual portfolio company names are not publicly disclosed in the sources reviewed; ISIA deploys via equipment-leasing and asset-finance structures rather than named equity stakes (e.g., a publicized strategic partnership with an "HDF"-region industrial counterpart documented on Eurazeo's ISIA site).
