Background

Sylvester Burley is a private-markets investor with roughly 13 years of experience spanning investment banking, energy/infrastructure private equity, and lower-middle-market private credit. He graduated from Harvard University (2007–2011) magna cum laude with a B.A. in Economics and a secondary field in Applied Mathematics. He began his career as an Investment Banking Analyst in J.P. Morgan's Power & Utilities group (2011–2013), where he was ranked the top analyst in his group for two consecutive years and advised on more than $2.5 billion in energy-sector transactions.

He then moved into energy and infrastructure private equity: Associate at Riverstone Holdings (2013–2015), where he helped negotiate the ~$650M sale of Mistral Energy assets to Pembina and supported Foresight Energy's ~$350M IPO and $1.55B debt refinancing; Senior Associate at Basalt Infrastructure Partners (2015–2017), executing a ~$140M equity investment in solar developer Soltage and a Texas microgrid follow-on; and Vice President / Senior Associate at Bregal Energy (Bregal Investments, 2017–2019). At Bregal he sourced and modeled a ~$500M solar platform investment, executed a ~$130M debt refinancing with Ares Management, sat on portfolio-company boards, and supported budgeting, FP&A, and strategic planning across the energy portfolio.

In 2019 he joined Avante Capital Partners in Los Angeles, rising to Partner, where he led deal sourcing and execution across technology, business services, healthcare, and industrial companies — reportedly achieving the highest equity IRR (700%+) and cash-on-cash (12x+) in the firm's history — and built out the junior deal team. Alongside this he co-founded RMI Insights (2018), a strategic and financial advisory consulting firm he bootstrapped to profitability as Managing Partner/COO.

In November 2024, Burley joined Altimer Capital as a Partner. Altimer is a women- and veteran-owned private credit and structured-equity firm (founded 2022 by American Capital alumni Natasha Fox and Patrick White) focused on technology-enabled businesses in the lower middle market. Burley supports the firm's continued expansion in that space; the firm has collectively deployed $3–4B+ of capital across 100+ transactions.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through Altimer Capital's strategy: flexible, custom-tailored private debt and structured equity financing for lower-middle-market, technology-enabled companies undergoing data- and technology-driven transformation.
  • Core sectors: software & technology, business/financial services, healthcare & life sciences, and value-added industrials.
  • Backs companies that "leverage the power of data to drive growth," providing financing solutions aligned with borrowers' strategic objectives rather than one-size-fits-all capital.
  • Personal edge from years in energy, renewables, and infrastructure PE (solar platforms, microgrids, LBOs, debt refinancings) plus consulting via RMI Insights — strong on financial modeling, capital structure, and operational/FP&A support.
  • This is not seed-stage angel investing. Despite the stub's "Angel / Seed Round" label, his mandate is institutional lower-middle-market credit and equity, targeting established, cash-flow-oriented businesses.

Notable Investments

  • Solar platform investment (~$500M) — sourced and modeled at Bregal Energy (renewable energy platform).
  • ~$130M debt refinancing with Ares Management — executed at Bregal Energy for a portfolio company.
  • Soltage (~$140M equity investment) — solar developer, at Basalt Infrastructure Partners.
  • Texas Microgrid (~$50M follow-on) — investment case prepared at Basalt.
  • Mistral Energy asset sale to Pembina (~$650M) — negotiated at Riverstone; described as Fund III's best-performing deal.
  • Foresight Energy — supported its ~$350M IPO and ~$1.55B debt refinancing at Riverstone.
  • At Avante Capital Partners, led deals across technology, business services, healthcare, and industrial companies (specific names not public), reportedly delivering the firm's best-ever equity IRR and cash-on-cash returns.
