Background

Talmadge O'Neill is a serial internet entrepreneur turned investor. He earned a BA from Claremont McKenna College and an MBA from the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. He began his career as a consultant at Boston Consulting Group (1995–1998), then joined the early team at GoTo.com/Overture — reportedly employee #12 — where he served as Vice President of Strategy & Investments (roughly 1998–2002) during the company's rise as a pioneer of paid search.

In 2002 O'Neill co-founded MeziMedia with former GoTo colleague Harry Tsao. Starting with the coupon site CouponMountain.com — launched for about $10,000 — the company grew into a comparison-shopping and coupon network operating in about 10 countries with offices in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Shanghai. Having raised less than $2.5 million from friends, family, and employees, MeziMedia reached more than $100 million in revenue over roughly six years and was sold to ValueClick (NASDAQ: VCLK) in 2007 in a deal reported at around $300 million. Two of the three companies O'Neill has co-founded have appeared on the Inc. 500 list of fastest-growing private companies.

After MeziMedia, O'Neill and Tsao founded Juvo Capital (2011, based in Monrovia/LA), a proprietary-capital venture firm with no outside LPs that has deployed more than $40 million across startups and late-stage companies. The two partners later also co-founded Juvo+ (Juvo Plus) in 2013, an e-commerce/consumer-products business that became one of the largest third-party sellers on Amazon. O'Neill has additionally served as a board member of ventures including LoveIt and VivoAquatics.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests his own and the firm's capital (no LPs), giving flexibility on stage and check timing — from seed/pre-seed through pre-IPO.
  • Focus areas: internet and software, consumer/e-commerce, education, AI, fintech, enterprise, cleantech, and social-impact companies.
  • Operator-investor lens: having bootstrapped MeziMedia from near-zero to a nine-figure exit on minimal capital, he favors capital-efficient, revenue-oriented business models.
  • Geographic tilt toward Los Angeles / Southern California, though the portfolio includes companies well beyond the region.
  • Willing to take active board roles (e.g., LoveIt, VivoAquatics) rather than purely passive checks.

Notable Investments

  • Chegg — education-technology company; pre-IPO investment (later NYSE-listed).
  • Dropbox — cloud file-storage/collaboration; early-stage backer (later Nasdaq-listed).
  • SolarCity — residential solar; pre-IPO exit (later acquired by Tesla).
  • Tesla Motors — listed among Juvo's notable exits.
