Background

Terry McDonough is the Managing Director of SEI Ventures, the seed-stage corporate venture fund launched by Strategic Education, Inc. in October 2018. Strategic Education said SEI Ventures would support education-technology startups and give portfolio companies opportunities to pilot technologies across Strayer University, Capella University, and coding boot camps.

Before leading SEI Ventures, McDonough had worked as an educator and consultant. Strategic Education’s launch announcement described him as a former Teach For America educator and McKinsey & Company consultant, and said he had experience launching two new business units at SEI. His LinkedIn profile and public bios also associate him with Strategic Education’s education technology and enterprise services work.

McDonough later served as President, Education Technology Services at Strategic Education. In that role, he was quoted in a July 12, 2022 Workforce Edge announcement about Caesars Entertainment’s tuition-benefit partnership, positioning Workforce Edge as part of Strategic Education’s employer-facing education benefits platform.

More recently, McDonough is listed by 4MATIV Technologies as CFO & President. Heart of America lists him as President of 4MATIV Technologies and says he leads growth, strategy, and finance there. That same bio identifies him as a former McKinsey consultant and Teach For America Corps Member, with education at MIT Sloan School of Management, Harvard Kennedy School, and The College of William and Mary.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • SEI Ventures was launched as a seed-stage fund for education technology companies focused on “transformational technologies and student success.”
  • The fund’s strategic advantage is not only capital: portfolio companies can pilot products across Strategic Education’s institutions, including Strayer University, Capella University, coding boot camps, and a base cited at 80,000+ learners and students.
  • Stated investment criteria include AI and machine learning for teaching and learning, reducing friction in non-instructional student experiences, improving student persistence, and designing the future of work.
  • McDonough’s own stated rationale in the NextStep investment was to back companies that “close skill gaps and equity gaps” while improving education ROI.
  • The fund appears most relevant for founders building tools that can be validated in adult-learning, higher-education, workforce-development, or student-success environments, especially where access to an institutional pilot is valuable.
