Theo Schulte

Theo Schulte is an Investment Principal at EnBW New Ventures (ENV), the roughly €100 million evergreen corporate venture arm of German energy utility EnBW, founded in 2015 and headquartered in Karlsruhe. He joined ENV in October 2017 as an analyst and was promoted twice — to associate, and then to investment manager in September 2020 — before reaching his current principal-level role. Over a tenure of about seven years he has built his career around the energy transition, championing the structural changes underway in the electricity sector and the role that startup innovation and investment can play in addressing climate change.

Before ENV, Schulte spent roughly six months from May 2017 as an entrepreneur in SpinLab's HHL Accelerator program, having earlier worked briefly as a business analyst at VC firm Kompass Digital Ventures. He was also a co-founder of the startup Kochhunger. Academically, he holds a graduate degree from HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management and an undergraduate degree from HELP University.

In his current role, Schulte leads ENV's push into the digital mobility sector and manages several portfolio companies. He sits as a non-executive board member of smart road-maintenance company Vialytics and parking-technology company Cleverciti, and serves as a board observer at solar-rental service DZ-4 and cloud-infrastructure software provider Gridscale. He led ENV's seed investment in Vialytics — a company EnBW itself helped co-found — and subsequently helped bring in additional venture capital from other investors.

His work has earned external recognition: he was named a GCV (Global Corporate Venturing) Rising Star in 2022 and was recognized among Global Corporate Venturing's top Emerging Leaders in corporate venturing in 2024.

• Invests through ENV in European startups that "make infrastructure digital and sustainable," built around three themes: electrification based on renewables, decentralization based on interconnected networks, and digitalization based on abundant computing power.
• Backs Series A companies primarily (with seed activity such as Vialytics), acting as lead or co-investor out of an evergreen ~€100M balance-sheet fund — a longer-horizon, strategically aligned capital base rather than a fixed-life fund.
• Personally owns the digital mobility thesis: technologies that "improve the quality of life in cities and make mobility human-friendly, sustainable, and efficient" (e.g., road-condition analytics and smart parking).
• Looks for domain-expert founding teams with diverse backgrounds and strong execution skills; ENV positions itself as bringing the strategic competences of the broader EnBW Group to portfolio companies.
• Motivated by climate impact — he frames the electricity sector's transformation as a high-leverage arena for tackling climate change.
