Background

Ted Leonsis was born January 8, 1957, in Brooklyn, New York, to a working-class Greek-American family, and graduated from Georgetown University in 1977 with a degree in American Studies. His entrepreneurial career began early: in 1981 he founded LIST, a personal-computing magazine, which he sold a few years later in a deal reported at roughly $40 million. In 1988 he founded Redgate Communications, an early new-media/marketing company that America Online acquired in 1994 — the transaction that brought Leonsis to AOL.

At AOL, Leonsis spent roughly 13–14 years in senior leadership, holding roles including President of America Online Services Company, President of AOL Studios, and ultimately Vice Chairman and President of the AOL Audience Business, before retiring from active management in 2006. AOL is also where he worked alongside Steve Case, his eventual partner at Revolution. After AOL he founded Revolution Money (a secure internet payments company sold to American Express in 2009) and SnagFilms, a documentary-streaming venture, while developing into a prolific technology investor and board member.

Today Leonsis is best known as the founder, chairman, managing partner, and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE), which owns the NHL's Washington Capitals (acquired 1999; 2018 Stanley Cup champions), the NBA's Washington Wizards (majority control from 2010), and the WNBA's Washington Mystics (2019 champions), plus the Capital City Go-Go (NBA G League), Monumental Sports Network, and Capital One Arena. He also co-owns and co-chairs aXiomatic Gaming, which holds a controlling interest in the esports organization Team Liquid. As a director he sits on the boards of American Express, Tempus AI, and Groupon, and serves on the NBA, NHL, and WNBA Boards of Governors. Forbes has pegged his net worth in the multi-billion-dollar range (roughly $3.1B in early 2025). He is also a Peabody- and Emmy-honored filmmaker, an author, and a major philanthropist who chairs the DC College Access Program (DC-CAP) and supports Georgetown University.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • The "double bottom line." Leonsis's signature philosophy: he looks for companies that generate strong financial returns *and* a measurable positive impact on people and society — "a real business, but we are doing something socially responsible." He backs founders "with a mission that extends beyond money."
  • Disrupt big industries from outside Silicon Valley. At Revolution Growth he and his partners make a select handful of "speed-up capital" investments each year in companies leveraging technology and new business models to disrupt existing multi-billion-dollar industries, deliberately favoring geographies beyond the traditional Bay Area hubs.
  • Growth-stage, hands-on capital. Revolution Growth is a ~$1 billion set of funds typically writing $25M–$50M checks and becoming active, operationally engaged partners — helping companies navigate scaling, policy, and regulation rather than acting as passive money.
  • Founder-first. He prioritizes confident, mission-driven entrepreneurs; his AOL operating background means he values founders who can build culture and "happy companies" (the theme of his writing on management).
  • Sector breadth around consumer, sports/gaming, health, fintech, and food. Across his angel and fund activity, recurring themes are consumer platforms, sports/entertainment/esports, AI-driven healthcare, identity/security, payments, and consumer/food brands.
