Background
Thierry Chignon has roughly 35 years of experience in the healthcare and medical-device industries, spanning operations, regulation, consulting, and investing. He began his career on the industrial side as Head Pharmacist at Institut Mérieux (a business later folded into Sanofi Pasteur), where he spent about a decade in production, quality assurance, quality control, regulatory affairs, and clinical roles. From 1997 to 2006 he served as Managing Director at Quintiles Consulting Europe (now part of IQVIA), building market-access and business strategies for innovative European health products, and during this period also acted as an expert to the European Commission for roughly five years, helping prepare medical-device guidelines and regulations.
He moved into investing in 2006 at Matignon Investissement et Gestion, where he raised and deployed what has been described as France's first dedicated European medical-technology fund (~€80M), overseeing eight investments and supporting portfolio management teams through product development, international expansion, and late-stage M&A or IPO exits.
In May 2014 Chignon joined Mérieux Développement / Mérieux Equity Partners as Senior Partner to launch and manage Mérieux Participations 2 (€150M), followed by Mérieux Participations 3 (€377M), executing capital-development and buyout deals in European and American MedTech, health, and nutrition companies. He is today a Managing Partner and Head of Investor Relations & Communication at the firm, which describes itself as a healthcare-dedicated investor with industrial roots and international reach across both buyout and venture strategies.
Academically, he holds a Degree in Pharmacy, a Master's degree from IEP Paris (Sciences Po), and an Executive MBA from HEC Paris.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests exclusively in healthcare and life sciences, leveraging Mérieux's industrial heritage; the firm says it has backed 50+ companies over 15 years across the growth spectrum from seed to buyout.
- Targets MedTech, health & nutrition (human and animal), diagnostics, and specialty pharma/ingredient services, favoring companies with differentiated products and international growth ambitions.
- Central macro thesis (per his 2024 Mergermarket/ION interview): European healthcare must improve technology, treatments, and diagnostics while controlling costs — he expects rising healthcare expenditure and positions efficiency as decisive for future returns.
- ESG is a core screen, not a bolt-on: the firm embeds environmental, social, and governance targets into portfolio companies and ties them to management compensation — "The firm ensures that sustainability is prioritized at all levels, from the management team to the fund itself."
- Acts as an active, hands-on investor, typically taking board seats and chairmanships and supporting management on product development, international market access, and eventual M&A or IPO exits.
