Background
Thomas Bradley is a Partner at StepStone Group, where he serves as Co-Head of the firm's Private Equity Secondaries team — a role he has held since joining StepStone in 2010. He sits on StepStone's Partners Committee, Secondaries Committee, and the StepStone Global Investment Committee, and heads the firm's Charitable Giving Program. He is based in StepStone's New York office. He holds a BA from Denison University.
Bradley joined StepStone in 2010 as part of the firm's acquisition of SilverBrook Private Equity, a secondary fund investment and private equity advisory platform he had recently co-founded. Alongside fellow SilverBrook partners Mark Maruszewski and Michael McCabe, he came aboard as a managing director in StepStone's New York City office, seeding what became the firm's dedicated secondaries practice. He continues to co-head that business with Mark Maruszewski.
Prior to SilverBrook, Bradley was a Partner at Pomona Capital from 1998 to 2010, where he helped oversee the firm's secondary, primary, and co-investment practices, representing more than $6 billion in total commitments from a global investor base. This long tenure in secondaries spans more than two decades, predating the asset class's mainstream institutional adoption.
Today the StepStone secondaries effort is supported by a dedicated team of roughly 37 professionals, drawing on the broader StepStone network of more than 1,000 professionals across 27 offices in 16 countries. Since inception, the platform has deployed over $14 billion across more than 210 private equity secondaries transactions.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Asset class: Private equity secondaries — buying existing LP fund interests (LP-led) and participating in GP-led / continuation-vehicle deals; this is institutional capital, not venture or seed investing.
- Differentiation: Targets "less efficient segments of the secondaries market," balancing LP-led and GP-led opportunities, and leverages StepStone's sponsor relationships, proprietary data, and information access to underwrite deals.
- Manager focus: Historically oriented toward US-based middle-market managers and high-quality ("best-in-class") sponsors.
- In his own words (Sept 2024): "This newly raised capital will allow us to continue to take advantage of the best risk-adjusted opportunities while partnering with best-in-class managers among an increasing desire for liquidity from global private equity investors."
- What makes the team commit: Track record, the strength of the secondaries market opportunity, and the platform's ability to provide liquidity to private equity investors seeking exits.
Notable Investments
- StepStone Secondary Opportunities Fund V (SSOF V) — closed at $7.4 billion in capital commitments (September 27, 2024); over 50% committed at close.
- StepStone Secondary Opportunities Fund IV — prior secondaries vintage in the program; an earlier secondaries fund closed at ~$2.1 billion.
- Platform track record — over $14 billion deployed across 210+ private equity secondaries transactions since inception.
- SilverBrook Private Equity — the firm Bradley co-founded, acquired by StepStone in 2010 to launch its secondaries practice.
