Background
Thomas Cabrol is one of the four co-founders of Dataiku, the enterprise AI and machine-learning platform company launched in Paris in 2013 alongside Florian Douetteau, Clément Stenac, and Marc Batty. Within Dataiku he serves as Chief Data Scientist, the technical/data-science voice among the founding team. Dataiku went on to become a French-American unicorn — it reached unicorn status in December 2019 when Alphabet's growth fund CapitalG invested — and has raised on the order of $1 billion across its funding history, operating from a New York headquarters.
Before Dataiku, Cabrol built a career almost entirely in data mining and applied analytics. He began as a Data Mining Consultant at TMIS Consultants (2003–2006), then spent 2006–2008 as a Senior Data Mining Consultant at Catalina Marketing France. He led the data mining team and geo-marketing initiatives at Apple Europe as CRM Intelligence & Data Mining Manager (2008–2010), managed the data team at gaming company IsCool Entertainment (2010–2012), and was lead data scientist at the data-visualization startup qunb (2012) shortly before co-founding Dataiku.
On the education side, Cabrol holds a five-year degree in Analytical CRM from the Université de Montpellier (early 2000s). He is a regular speaker in the data-science community, having presented at venues such as the Paris Java User Group and the Data Science Festival in London, and has authored technical posts on the Dataiku blog.
Separately from his operating role, Cabrol invests personally as an angel, most visibly in early-stage French deep-tech and data startups, frequently alongside fellow Dataiku co-founder Marc Batty.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as an angel at the seed stage, backing very early technical companies rather than leading priced institutional rounds.
- Gravitates toward data-, AI- and machine-learning-centric businesses — consistent with his own background building Dataiku and a career in data mining/data science.
- Sector interests span enterprise applications and food/agriculture & satellite-data tech (per portfolio-tracking sources).
- Tends to co-invest with Dataiku co-founder Marc Batty, suggesting a founder-operator network approach to deal flow.
- Focuses predominantly on France-based / European ventures.
Notable Investments
- SpaceSense — Paris-based agtech/spacetech startup (founded 2019) that uses AI to automate processing of satellite imagery for agriculture. Cabrol participated as an angel investor in its ~€1M (~$1.2M) seed round in October 2020, alongside co-founder Marc Batty, lead investor Techmind, and Space Ventures Investors.
