Background

Thomas Crewe is a Principal at Apax Partners, one of the world's oldest and largest private equity firms. He joined Apax in 2015 as an Associate, was promoted to Senior Associate, and has held the title of Principal since September 2019. He is based in the firm's London office and works within Apax's Technology (and, on certain deals, Services) investment teams.

Before Apax, Crewe was a management consultant at The Boston Consulting Group from roughly 2013 to 2015, advising clients across a range of industries out of BCG's London, New York and Johannesburg offices. That operational and cross-sector grounding is reflected in the kinds of businesses he backs at Apax — market leaders where value is created through operational discipline and buy-and-build M&A rather than early-stage risk.

On the education side, Crewe holds a Master of Arts in Economics and Management from the University of Oxford and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Publicly he also signals an interest in social-impact board and school-governor roles.

He currently sits on the boards/supervisory boards of Apax portfolio companies including Odido (the Dutch telecom operator, which he joined on 23 January 2026) and Candela, and has been an active deal-team member on transactions such as Norva24, Veriforce, Alcumus, Safetykleen and Unilabs.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests the institutional Apax Funds into established, market-leading companies — the opposite end of the spectrum from angel/seed investing.
  • Core themes: Technology and Services, especially branch-based or platform service businesses in operationally complex, fragmented markets ripe for consolidation.
  • Value-creation playbook centers on operational excellence + M&A / buy-and-build to build pan-European (and global) champions.
  • On the Norva24 take-private (May 2025) he framed the appeal as a "market-leading position in an operationally complex sector," strong local relationships and a proven M&A track record — noting "the opportunity to deepen Norva24's footprint and expand into new markets is compelling" and the goal of "building a pan-European market leader."
  • Comfortable with public-to-private transactions, arguing that going private enables faster decision-making free from quarterly-reporting constraints.

Notable Investments

  • Norva24 — Swedish underground-infrastructure maintenance provider (80+ branches across the Nordics and Germany); Apax Funds take-private, May 2025.
  • Odido — Dutch mobile/telecom operator; Crewe joined the Supervisory Board on 23 January 2026, strengthening its technology and governance expertise.
  • Candela — technology company; Crewe serves on the board.
  • Veriforce — supply-chain risk / contractor compliance software (Services/Tech).
  • Alcumus — risk-management, compliance and health-&-safety SaaS/services provider.
  • Safetykleen — pan-European industrial parts-cleaning and surface-treatment services business.
  • Unilabs — European clinical laboratory / diagnostics services group.
