Background
Thomas J. McGill is a co-founder and Managing Partner of Evergreen Pacific Partners (EPP Capital), a Seattle-based private equity firm he helped launch in February 2004 alongside Timothy Bernardez and Michael Nibarger. The firm went on to raise two institutional buyout funds — Evergreen Pacific Partners LP (closed 2005) and Evergreen Pacific Partners II LP (a $425 million fund closed in 2008) — reportedly totaling around $700 million in committed capital and focused on established, middle-market companies in the western portion of North America.
Before founding Evergreen, McGill was a Principal at another Seattle-based private equity firm. Earlier in his career he served as Vice President of La Haye Laboratories, Inc. in Seattle, where he negotiated the sale of the company to Nestlé S.A. in 1998. He began his career at Procter & Gamble. He holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Washington and an M.B.A. from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA, and he has served as a Director of the University of Washington Foundation.
As a co-founder, McGill has sat on the boards of essentially all of Evergreen's portfolio companies, giving him a hands-on, operationally involved style typical of control-oriented middle-market buyout investors rather than a passive check-writer.
Note on classification: The stub described McGill as an "Angel Investor" writing "Seed Round" checks. Verified sources do not support this. EPP Capital / Evergreen Pacific Partners is a control-oriented, middle-market private equity buyout firm with minimum equity checks around $15 million into mature, revenue-generating companies — a very different profile from a seed-stage angel. The contact details (eppcapital.com email domain and the 206-262-4709 phone number) do match this firm. Founders seeking seed capital are unlikely to be a fit.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in traditional, middle-market companies in western North America (13 western U.S. states + 2 western Canadian provinces), not early-stage startups.
- Structures deals as buyouts (LBO/MBO/MBI), management-led buyouts, consolidations/roll-ups, divestitures, and growth-equity investments — i.e., control or significant minority positions in established businesses.
- Targets asset- and cash-flow-based businesses: manufacturing, distribution, specialty packaging, consumer products, and media.
- Writes large checks — a minimum equity investment reported around $15 million — into companies with meaningful existing revenue (roughly $25M–$250M range).
- Emphasizes operational board-level involvement; McGill has personally served on the boards of the firm's portfolio companies.
Notable Investments
- SafeWorks — global provider of suspended-access/powered platform products; EPP acquisition (~2014).
- Span Alaska — Alaska-focused freight forwarding and logistics; EPP acquisition (April 2014).
- Vantage Mobility International (VMI) — manufacturer of wheelchair-accessible vehicles; EPP acquisition (February 2014).
