Background

Thomas Weinmann is a Hamburg-based private equity investor and the founder, CEO and Managing Partner of REIA Capital. REIA’s team page says he has more than 25 years of private equity experience across due diligence and investor relations, and his REIA biography describes him as having worked as a private equity fund manager, financier and fund investor.

He studied Business Administration at the University of Passau, completing his studies in 1997. He then began in leveraged finance at Dresdner Kleinwort, where REIA says he was involved in structuring the first German large-cap transaction in 1999. From 2000 to 2012 he worked at BC Partners as an investment professional and partner on direct private equity investments, including public-to-private transactions and IPOs.

In 2012 Weinmann founded Astorius, a private equity fund-of-funds manager aimed at opening private equity access to private investors, family offices and smaller institutions. Astorius announced in October 2022 that Weinmann stepped down as managing director effective September 30, 2022, remaining advisory to the firm until his exit as shareholder.

After leaving Astorius, Weinmann founded REIA Capital in 2023. REIA’s stated business is advising and marketing Irish REIA Capital funds focused on target investments in private equity funds, with intensive due diligence as the core selection process. He also sits on advisory and administrative boards; Alphaskill lists him on its Advisory Committee / NED roster.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • REIA’s stated focus is “Small & Lower Mid Cap Private Equity in Europe and North America,” accessed through private equity fund-of-funds rather than seed venture deals.
  • REIA says it looks for “the best Private Equity fund managers in the market” using its network, systematic analysis and long private equity experience.
  • The core thesis is that attractive small and lower mid-cap private equity managers can outperform because of lower entry valuations, operational value-creation potential and add-on acquisitions.
  • REIA emphasizes risk reduction through diversification: its fund-of-funds bundle several complementary private equity funds, giving investors indirect exposure to an estimated 80–120 small and medium-sized companies.
  • Due diligence is central. In its first fund launch announcement, REIA said it expected to review 60–100 private equity funds per year and identify four to eight for potential investment.
  • Weinmann has argued publicly that manager selection is decisive in small-cap private equity, especially finding teams with operational expertise, credible sourcing away from crowded auctions and the ability to professionalize and scale smaller businesses.
  • REIA highlights alignment through meaningful GP/team commitments; public reports state the REIA team has invested more than EUR 20 million across its own funds.

Notable Investments

  • Brenntag - Weinmann has publicly described working on BC Partners’ 2006 Brenntag transaction, including add-on acquisitions, crisis management through the financial crisis, IPO work and subsequent block trades; Brenntag later entered the DAX.
  • REIA Capital Fonds I / RCF01 - European small-cap private equity fund-of-funds; launched in 2024 with a EUR 100 million target and closed in April 2026 at more than EUR 90 million from over 180 investors.
  • REIA Capital Fonds II / RCF02 - North America small-cap private equity fund-of-funds launched in 2025; target volume USD 75 million, minimum subscription USD 250,000, planned portfolio of seven to ten private equity funds plus five to ten co-investments, primarily in the U.S.
  • REIA Capital Fonds III / RCF03 - European small-cap private equity fund-of-funds launched in January 2026 with a EUR 100 million target.
  • Astorius Capital Fonds I - Astorius’ first private equity fund-of-funds, closed in 2014; Astorius later reported the fund had distributed more than 2x DPI after costs by its seventh anniversary.
  • Promus Asset Management partnership - REIA announced a December 2024 cooperation with Chicago-based Promus to identify North American small and lower mid-cap private equity funds and offer European investors access through a European fund structure.
