Background

Dr. Poon Thong Yuen is a Singapore-based life-sciences investor with roughly two decades of global venture-capital and operating experience. He earned a doctorate in Medicinal Chemistry and an honours degree in Pharmacy from the National University of Singapore, and has direct grounding in community pharmacy and pharmaceutical manufacturing — an unusually hands-on scientific base for a healthcare investor.

He joined EDB Investments (EDBI) / Bio*One Capital — the corporate venture arm of Singapore's Economic Development Board, managing an ~US$800 million life-sciences fund — in early 2004, working across therapeutics, medtech, diagnostics, CRO, and healthcare-services deals. From 2008 to 2011 he served as Head of the EDBI Boston Center, leading East Coast North American investments in life sciences (and also cleantech and digital media), which explains his US contact footprint. Over this period he rose from Manager–Investments to Vice President.

He subsequently moved into operating and later-stage investment roles: he was Chief Investment Officer of Zicom MedTacc, a Singapore-based medtech investor that backed startups from prototyping through market adoption (including HistoIndex). On 1 July 2018 he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of HistoIndex, a Singapore digital-pathology / AI imaging company expanding into clinical-trial services for NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis).

Most recently he founded Triome Ventures (incorporated in Singapore on 29 November 2021, at 32 Pekin Street, #05-01), a healthcare-focused venture builder making Seed and Series A investments in biotech, medtech, and digital-health companies, where he is Founder & General Partner. His email domain (bio1capital.com) and several profiles keep him tied to the Bio*One Capital / EDBI ecosystem he came up through.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at Seed and Series A in healthcare startups — biotech/therapeutics, medical devices, diagnostics, healthcare services, and digital health.
  • Operates as a venture builder, not just a passive check-writer: his career pattern (Zicom MedTacc, HistoIndex CEO, Triome) emphasizes moving companies from prototype to market adoption, suggesting he favors deep operational involvement and board-level support.
  • Strong bias toward scientifically rigorous founders — his own medicinal-chemistry/pharmacy training and history of therapeutics and device deals indicate he diligences the underlying science, not just the market.
  • Cross-border orientation: comfortable bridging Singapore/Asia startups with US, China, Australia, and Japan markets and capital, reflecting his EDBI Boston Center and pan-Asian deal experience.

Notable Investments

  • Artisan Pharma — biopharma; acquired by Asahi Kasei Pharma.
  • Inviragen — vaccines (dengue and other infectious diseases); acquired by Takeda Pharmaceutical.
  • Forma Therapeutics — oncology/drug-discovery platform (later NASDAQ-listed; struck a major Celgene collaboration).
  • Rapid Micro Biosystems — automated microbial-detection systems for pharma manufacturing; NASDAQ-listed.
  • Ivantis — minimally invasive glaucoma device maker; acquired by Alcon.
  • Dx Assay — molecular diagnostics joint venture with Qiagen.
  • HistoIndex — AI-based digital pathology / fibrosis imaging; he served as CEO (operating role, supported earlier by Zicom MedTacc).
