Background

Thor Jespersen is the Managing Director (and long-time CEO) of BOREAN Innovation, an Aalborg-based innovation incubator that was one of four incubators in Denmark approved as operators by the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation under the Ministry of Higher Education and Science. In that role he holds executive responsibility for the firm's investments and portfolio, deciding which early-stage ventures receive Borean's pre-seed and seed capital together with hands-on mentoring and operational support.

His career spans roughly two decades in Nordic venture capital and private equity, preceded by about ten years in technology, business development and general management. Earlier in his career he served as Managing Director of IconMedialab in Denmark, where — by his own account — he built up the Danish operations from scratch. That mix of operating and investing experience is reflected in his stated skill set: deal-making, negotiation, business development, finance, M&A and venture capital.

BOREAN Innovation itself operated as a state-financed incubator providing pre-seed and seed capital; in 2019 the entity (Borean Innovation A/S) was selected as one of the future "Exit Operators" tasked with managing and winding down existing incubator portfolios. Public aggregators credit Borean with a large portfolio — figures range from ~50 to over 100 recorded investments — including multiple IPOs and several trade-sale exits, making Jespersen one of the more prolific early-stage backers in northern Denmark's innovation ecosystem.

Note on the firm's web presence: the borean.dk domain that once hosted Borean Innovation has since been repurposed (it currently serves unrelated gaming content), so the historical email and website should be treated as legacy contact points rather than active channels.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage: Pre-seed and seed — Borean backs companies from the idea stage through prototype and go-to-market, exactly the "first institutional check" niche the stub labels *Angel Investors / Seed Round*.
  • Ticket: Structured incubator financing of up to ~DKK 6M per company, typically staged (a larger first round followed by smaller follow-on tranches), paired with professional counselling and administrative/operational infrastructure rather than pure cash.
  • What makes them say yes: Innovative ventures "with significant global business potential" that also "deliver meaningful societal value" — Jespersen frames investments around solutions that are both commercially scalable internationally and socially useful.
  • Sector tilt: Strong bias toward deep tech and hardware — space/satellite tech, clean energy (hydrogen electrolysis), medtech and life sciences, maritime safety, and consumer/industrial products — reflecting Borean's roots in research- and university-adjacent innovation.
  • Value-add: As an incubator-investor, Borean contributes start-up expertise, back-office infrastructure and follow-on financing to help commercialize early technology, not just capital.

Notable Investments

  • GomSpace — Nanosatellite / space-tech company; an early Borean investment that grew from a small Aalborg start-up into a satellite exporter to 40+ countries and became a publicly listed company (GomSpace Group AB).
  • Green Hydrogen Systems (GreenHydrogen) — Hydrogen electrolyser manufacturer; listed on Nasdaq (Nordic) in June 2021.
  • Port-Safety — Maritime drowning-prevention company behind the LifeLadder® harbour safety ladder; Borean invested in 2017 to fund production and market entry (combined with the Danish Market Development Fund, total funding reached ~€0.8M). Jespersen called LifeLadder "an intuitively appealing solution."
  • Hoba Therapeutics — Biotech / therapeutics company in which Borean was among the early investors (later backed by Eir Ventures).
  • Access Technology — Portfolio company noted among Borean's exits (acquisition).
  • Pesitho — Clean-energy solar cooking / household appliance startup.
  • Lapee — Female urinal / public-sanitation consumer product.
  • Faster Plaster — Building/consumer products startup.
  • Steinwurf, Dantracker, Drugster, BBHS — Additional Danish portfolio companies spanning software/networking, tracking, health and consumer/industrial products.
