Background
Tim A. Bowman is a Managing Director of Bedford Capital, a Toronto-based private equity firm formed in 1982 that invests in established lower-middle-market companies. He began his career as a corporate and securities lawyer at the Toronto firm Davies, Ward & Beck, before moving into industry as Vice-President, Corporate Development of Magna International, the global automotive-parts group.
Bowman subsequently co-founded Apex Capital, where he completed buyouts of businesses in Canada and the United States and, in some cases, took an active role operating those businesses. He later served as Executive Managing Director of BMO Nesbitt Burns, where he was responsible for managing over $400 million of capital invested or committed for investment in mid-market companies — experience that maps directly onto Bedford's control-investment strategy.
He holds B.Eng., M.B.A. and LL.B. degrees, an unusually cross-disciplinary combination of engineering, business and law, and has served on numerous corporate boards over his career. At Bedford he worked alongside other principals including Managing Director Elliott Knox and Partner David Hass. Note that some databases indicate Bedford Capital wound down / ceased new-fund operations around March 2023, so Bowman's activity in recent years has centered on managing and exiting existing portfolio holdings rather than new platform investments.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs established, profitable lower-middle-market businesses — typically $2–15 million of EBITDA — rather than early-stage or venture companies.
- Writes initial equity checks of roughly $5–15 million into platform companies, with capacity for follow-on capital to fund add-on acquisitions and growth.
- Prefers majority / control positions, but will selectively consider minority investments.
- Pursues a range of situations: acquisition financings, growth financings, generational transfers of family-owned businesses, corporate divestitures, industry consolidations, and take-privates.
- Concentrates on industrial and consumer-facing sectors it knows well — aerospace, manufacturing, distribution, food, business/consumer services, retail and transportation.
- Geographic bias toward companies near Toronto, reflecting a hands-on, board-level ownership model.
Notable Investments
- Champion Petfoods (maker of ORIJEN and ACANA super-premium pet food) — Bedford invested in 2012; the Alberta company grew into a global brand and was ultimately acquired by Mars, Incorporated, a landmark Canadian exit.
- L.B. Maple Treat Corporation — one of the world's largest maple-syrup bottlers/processors; Bedford completed the sale of the business to Champlain Financial Corporation in February 2016.
- Stewart Precision Manufacturing — precision machining / industrial manufacturing platform investment, illustrating Bedford's manufacturing focus.
