Background
Tim Dibble began his career in 1986 at the Bank of Boston in its Acquisition Finance Division, where he structured and monitored management buyouts in cash-flow industries. In 1989 he joined the venture and private-equity firm Burr, Egan, Deleage & Co., the predecessor to the Alta franchise, and has spent his career within that lineage ever since. He earned an Economics degree from Wesleyan University.
He is the Founder and Managing General Partner of Alta Communications (founded in the mid-1990s), an investment firm focused on the media and communications sectors — broadcasting, digital/online media, direct marketing, telecommunications, B2B media and publishing, out-of-home media, content and cable. Over his career he led Alta's push into online and digital media and served on the boards of media companies including Telemedia Communications, Inc., NativeX and Jumpstart Automotive Media, alongside investments in radio, television, cable, telecom and security monitoring.
Today he is a Managing General Partner at Alta Equity Partners, a Concord, Massachusetts private equity firm that invests in lower-middle-market companies across a variety of industries and has backed more than 70 companies over roughly 30 years. He currently holds board seats at AEP portfolio and affiliated companies including Greenwood Emergency Vehicles, MedOne Healthcare, Robinson Aviation, Reach Analytics and Emergency Vehicle Holdings LLC.
Outside of investing, Dibble is deeply involved in nonprofit work. He served on the board of Year Up (now Year Up United) for roughly 11 years, including a term as National Board Chair; chairs the board of Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO); sits on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts / Massachusetts Bay (and was previously its Board Chair); and is a board member of the youth-sports nonprofit Put Me In! He and his wife have five children, whose experience in youth sports informs his involvement with Put Me In!
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as a control/lead private-equity investor in lower middle market companies, describing the firm's approach as partnering "with talented management teams... regardless of size, industry segment or investment structure."
- Deal types: recapitalizations of family-owned businesses, management buyouts, corporate divestitures of non-core assets or businesses, debt restructuring/bankruptcy situations, operational turnarounds, and businesses undergoing fundamental change.
- Generalist by mandate, but Dibble personally brings decades of specialization in media, communications, digital/online media, telecom and cable, plus operating-oriented sectors (emergency vehicles, healthcare services, aviation services).
- Emphasis on backing and partnering with strong management teams rather than a pure sector thesis — the firm's differentiation is flexibility on structure and a long (30-year, 70+ company) operating track record.
- Check size and specific EBITDA thresholds are not publicly disclosed by the firm; omitted here rather than guessed.
