Background

Tim Gallagher is the Executive General Manager – Northern Assets at AAM Investment Group, a Brisbane-based, Australian owned and operated diversified investment management group that structures, operates and manages investments across agricultural, direct property and infrastructure asset classes. In his role, Tim is responsible for the operational management of AAM's Northern Assets, drawing on extensive experience in the management and development of livestock and farming operations across Northern Australia.

Tim brings a deep operational agribusiness background rather than a venture/finance one. From 2011 he was Managing Director of CRF Limited, one of Australia's largest lamb processors, based at Colac, Victoria, where the business processed over 1.5 million sheep and lambs per year for Coles and export markets. Prior to that, from around 2004 to 2011, he held a number of senior executive roles at the Australian Agricultural Company (AACo) — including supply-chain development across live export, domestic, branded feedlot and wagyu markets, and general management of breeding and trading operations overseeing roughly 500,000 head of cattle across some 6.7 million hectares.

Earlier in his career, Tim managed large diversified irrigated and dryland cropping operations across central and southern Queensland, spanning cotton and cereal crops. That combination of livestock, processing, supply-chain and broadacre cropping experience underpins his current mandate running AAM's northern portfolio of operating agricultural assets. (Public sources do not list his formal education.)

AAM Investment Group itself was founded in 2007 and identifies, funds, acquires and actively manages high-quality agricultural assets for long-term value, with a stated emphasis on environmental sustainability and animal welfare. The group has over A$750 million invested across beef, sheep, cropping, poultry and timber supply chains at 35+ sites across five Australian states and territories.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as an institutional real-assets manager, not a startup angel — AAM acquires, operates and develops physical Australian agricultural assets for long-term returns, then "actively manages" them to optimise value.
  • Sector focus: beef cattle, sheep/lamb and wool, broadacre and irrigated cropping (cotton, summer/winter grains), poultry (broiler chicken) and sustainably-sourced timber supply chains.
  • Value drivers stated by the firm: precision management, sustainable practices, renewable-energy technology, high animal-welfare standards, and long-term productivity of the underlying land and supply chain.
  • Deal scale: fund-level — e.g., a Diversified Agriculture Fund raised A$60m+ initially (crossing A$500m AUM) and a circa A$200m core-plus poultry/broiler vehicle (advised by Gresham Partners); total group AUM ~A$1 billion.
  • Tim's specific lens: operational excellence and development of livestock and farming enterprises in Northern Australia — he is the operator/asset-manager side of the platform rather than a check-writing deal originator.

Notable Investments

  • AAM Diversified Agriculture Fund — open-ended fund acquiring beef, lamb, poultry and cropping properties; raised A$60m+ initially and has grown past ~A$500m in assets.
  • AAM broiler/poultry investment vehicle — a circa A$200m core-plus chicken-broiler asset platform, with Gresham Partners engaged as adviser.
  • AAM Northern Assets portfolio — the northern-Australia livestock and farming operations Tim directly manages, part of AAM's 35+ sites across five states/territories.
  • AAM operating asset base — over A$750m invested across beef cattle, sheep, cropping, poultry and sustainably-sourced timber supply chains.
