Background
Tim Sumner co-founded Knox Investment Partners in 2004 (with Bret Jackson) and serves as a Managing Director. He is a director and investment committee member across the firm's successive funds (Funds I–IV). At Knox he specialises in deal structuring, financing and execution, and has led the firm's transactions across the Asia-Pacific region. Knox is an Auckland-based private equity manager that partners with private companies in New Zealand and Australia, targeting growth and transition opportunities in the lower mid-market.
Before founding Knox, Tim built close to two decades of private equity and finance experience — internationally with Credit Suisse in New York and then domestically in New Zealand. He began his career in accounting with KPMG, working first in Auckland and later in Moscow, where he developed a foundation in financial analysis and financial-statement work.
Tim graduated from the University of Otago with a BCom and a Diploma for Graduates (Dip Grad), majoring in Economics. He is a Chartered Accountant (CA) and a member of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand.
It is worth flagging that the stub record classified Tim as an "angel investor" writing "seed round" cheques; this appears to be a data-source mislabel. Knox is a lower mid-market buyout/growth PE firm writing eight-figure equity cheques into established companies, so founders seeking pre-seed/seed capital are unlikely to be a fit.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through the Knox private equity funds (currently Fund IV), targeting growth, transition and succession/buyout opportunities in the lower mid-market of New Zealand and Australia.
- Concentrates on businesses with enterprise values of ~NZD $25–200 million, with a target equity investment of NZD $10–15 million per transaction.
- Sector-agnostic — invests across a wide range of industries rather than a single vertical.
- Positions Knox as a hands-on, strategic investor: it backs quality management teams and supports both organic and inorganic (bolt-on/acquisition-led) expansion and operational improvement to drive accelerated growth and returns.
- Tim's personal edge is in deal structuring, financing and execution, reflecting his Credit Suisse and CA/KPMG background.
Notable Investments
- OPUS Print Group (formerly Knox Print Media) — New Zealand/Australia commercial print roll-up built by Knox; Knox exited in September 2018 via sale to Left Field Printing Group.
- AAM Group — Australian aerial mapping / geospatial survey business; Knox invested ~A$11 million and pursued a buy-and-build strategy, including the bolt-on acquisition of Global Geomatics, a land-survey business in South Africa.
- Australian publishing/media platform — Knox paid a reported ~NZD $50 million for an Australian publisher (reported by Private Equity International), consistent with its media/print investment theme.
- Simplifydigital — communications/services portfolio company associated with Knox in aggregator databases.
