Background

Timothy F. Howe has been a healthcare and life-sciences venture investor since 1984, when he joined the U.S. operation of Schroder Ventures. In 1990 he co-founded Collinson Howe Venture Partners ("CHVP") with Jeff Collinson, and in 1997 the two co-founded CHL Medical Partners, an early-stage healthcare-services and life-sciences investment firm based in Stamford, Connecticut. Over his career he has co-managed multiple venture portfolios spanning Schroder Ventures, CHL Medical Partners, Biotechnology Investment Group LLC, HealthInvest Equity Partners, L.P., and the CHVP portfolio.

Howe is a specialist early-stage investor: he has served as an active board member for more than 30 early-stage companies in the biotechnology, medical device, and healthcare-services areas, many of which went on to complete public offerings. As a lead investor he backed companies including Incyte Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: INCY), Alexion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ALXN), American Renal Associates, and Genomic Health (NASDAQ: GHDX, later acquired by Exact Sciences).

Beyond investing, Howe was an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Columbia Graduate School of Business from 1995 to 2012, where he taught a course on Venture Capital Management. He is a graduate of Columbia College and the Columbia Graduate School of Business.

He continues to serve on company boards, including (per recent listings) Ambra Health, Genome Medical, Inc., and CareWell Urgent Care Centers of New England.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at the start-up and early stage ("seed"/formation stage), frequently as the lead investor, taking active board seats to help build companies.
  • Sector concentration in healthcare: biotechnology, medical devices, healthcare services, diagnostics/genomics, and health IT — reflecting CHL Medical Partners' self-description as "an early-stage healthcare-services investor."
  • Track record oriented toward companies that reach public-market or strategic-acquisition outcomes — many of his 30+ board companies completed IPOs or were sold to larger acquirers.
  • Deep bench of operating and board experience; his teaching of "Venture Capital Management" at Columbia signals a hands-on, fundamentals-driven approach to company building rather than passive capital.

Notable Investments

  • Incyte Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: INCY) — biopharmaceutical company; became a large-cap public company.
  • Alexion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ALXN) — rare-disease biopharma; major public-market success (later acquired by AstraZeneca).
  • Genomic Health (NASDAQ: GHDX) — cancer diagnostics; acquired by Exact Sciences.
  • American Renal Associates ("ARA") — dialysis-services provider.
  • Ascend Health, Inc. — behavioral-health services company; sold to Universal Health Services (UHS).
