Background

'Tokunboh Ishmael is an impact investor with more than two decades of experience across investment banking, private equity, technology, and new business development in Africa, Europe, and North America. She is a CFA charter-holder, corporate financier, and M&A banker who has worked on over US$5.6 billion of transactions across the UK, USA, and Africa. She began her career in corporate and analyst roles (Amerada Hess, Citibank, BSG Consulting) before moving into investment banking at Salomon Smith Barney, where she executed billions of dollars in M&A, capital raising, and IPO activity. She subsequently built her private-equity track record as an Investment Principal at Sussex Place Ventures (2001), Country Partner at Aureos Capital (now part of The Abraaj Group, 2003–2005) — where she helped raise the first Aureos West Africa Fund — and Managing Director at Avante Capital (2005–2007), where she led the first secondary listing of a Nigerian company on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

In 2007 she co-founded Alitheia Capital in Lagos alongside Jumoke Akinwunmi, pioneering "profit with a purpose" impact-investing private equity in West Africa. Alitheia manages over US$250–300 million across its funds (including the uMunthu Fund and Alitheia IDF), with a portfolio that has expanded across roughly 20 countries and backed tech and fintech pioneers such as Paga, MAX.ng, SparkMeter, and Seamfix, as well as agribusiness leaders like Psaltry (a large West African sorbitol producer).

In 2014 she co-founded the Alitheia IDF Fund with Polo Leteka of IDF Capital (South Africa), a gender-lens private equity fund based between Lagos and Johannesburg. Alitheia IDF reached a final close of US$100 million in December 2021 — with the European Investment Bank joining as closing investor with $24.6 million — making it the largest gender-lens private equity fund by value in Africa. The fund invests in growth-stage SMEs led by gender-diverse teams, targeting the large financing gap facing female entrepreneurs.

She holds a first degree in Computer Science and Economics (Obafemi Awolowo University, 1988) and an MSc in Advanced Computing Methods (1991); she completed an International Management Program at NYU Stern (1996) and earned an MBA in Finance and Strategy from London Business School (1997). She is a 2013 Yale World Fellow, a member of the inaugural class of the Aspen Institute's Finance Leaders Fellowship, and has served as a panelist on Dragons' Den Nigeria.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Impact + returns ("profit with a purpose"): Pioneers impact investing that seeks solid financial returns alongside measurable social impact for African communities.
  • Gender-lens investing is central: "Diverse teams outperform solely male or solely female teams." She frames the strategy around closing the ~$42 billion financing gap between male and female entrepreneurs and confronting affinity bias and performance bias in capital allocation.
  • Team over solo genius: "A company is not made by the genius of one person… You need a team." She weights leadership quality and a founder's ability to absorb external feedback heavily.
  • Hands-on value-add: Pre-investment, she identifies skill gaps in the business and helps hire to fill them, treating capital as one input among many.
  • Stage & sectors: Growth-stage SMEs and tech-enabled financial institutions; sectors span fintech/payments, logistics, agribusiness/food, healthcare, retail distribution, energy, and digital identity.
  • Geography: Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and Zambia, with broader continental exposure.
