Background

Tom Lunan is a Toronto-based finance executive who has served as Chief Financial Officer at B.E.S.T. Funds since 2000, where he oversees portfolio management, ongoing compliance procedures and regulatory obligations across the firm's vehicles. He is CFO of the B.E.S.T. Venture Opportunities Fund and of Tier One Capital Limited Partnership (a CSE-listed limited partnership), and also holds the roles of Vice-President and Chief Compliance Officer of B.E.S.T. Investment Counsel Limited. B.E.S.T. Funds is a Canadian venture manager with a track record dating back to the mid-1990s and more than 350 completed transactions.

Before joining B.E.S.T., Lunan built a regulatory and capital-markets background. He served as Manager, Company Listings at the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), and earlier worked in the Corporate Finance Branch of the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC). This combination of listings, securities-regulation and compliance experience underpins his current oversight of the firm's public and private fund structures.

Lunan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Accounting from Wilfrid Laurier University and carries the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designations. He is a past director of the Toronto CFA Society and a past director of Canadian World Fund Limited, a TSX-listed closed-end fund.

Over his career he has sat on the boards of numerous private technology companies as an investor-director, including GridIron Software (2006–2011), CNSX / the Canadian Securities Exchange operator (2006–2010) and EVault (2005–2007), and has been associated with Canadian General Investments. In June 2019 he was appointed to the advisory board of Alt 5 Sigma, a fintech firm building digital-asset trading and exchange platforms, where he was described as a "Canadian technology venture capital veteran."

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through the B.E.S.T. Venture Opportunities Fund in "high-growth Canadian companies," seeking "rapidly growing, emerging technologies" and businesses that leverage intellectual property for a competitive advantage.
  • Core sectors: software, cloud computing, financial services and clean tech, with legacy exposure to technology, media & entertainment, communications and healthcare.
  • Invests across stages — from seed and start-up through later-stage financing — and diversifies across both public and private markets and across companies at different stages of development.
  • As a labour-sponsored venture fund now structured with "permanent capital," the fund emphasizes patient, long-hold positions rather than fixed redemption-driven timelines.
  • On his digital-assets interest, Lunan stated that Alt 5 "provides a unique solution to broker dealers and other financial market participants in the new era of Digital Assets and are positioned to become a leader in this sector."
