Background
Tomas Almgren is a co-founder, Partner, and CEO of Valentum, a Stockholm-based M&A advisory firm he helped establish in the fall of 2012. Valentum was built to help successful entrepreneurs run corporate transactions — chiefly company sales — in the SEK 100 million to 2 billion range, and it grew into one of Sweden's leading sell-side advisors, completing roughly 50 transactions in its first eight years while working with both entrepreneurs and private-equity funds.
Before founding Valentum, Almgren spent several years in corporate finance and completed numerous transactions. Earlier in his career he worked in equity finance and securities lending at Swedbank Markets. He holds a master's degree in business and economics from the Stockholm School of Economics.
In September 2020, Valentum merged with the international M&A advisor Clearwater International and became Clearwater International Sweden, adding Stockholm to Clearwater's network (which expanded to 18 offices across roughly 10 countries in Europe, Asia, and North America). Almgren, alongside fellow partner Gustaf Plyhm, continued to lead the Swedish M&A advisory practice from Stockholm following the merger. The firm operates under partner ownership and retains the Valentum brand and website domain in Sweden.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Works on the sell-side and buy-side of M&A for unlisted, founder-owned mid-market companies — this is advisory work, not principal investing or angel/seed funding.
- Typical transaction size: SEK ~100 million to 2 billion in enterprise value; the firm reports executing deals "annually worth billions of SEK."
- Emphasis on bespoke, tailored transaction processes rather than standardized auctions, leveraging global buyer relationships ("access to and prioritised by all potential buyers").
- Clients are entrepreneurs/founders and private-equity funds; the firm positions itself as Sweden's leading sell-side M&A advisor for entrepreneurially owned companies.
Notable Investments
- The firm states it had completed roughly 50 M&A transactions in Sweden and internationally over its first eight years (2012–2020), advising entrepreneurs and private-equity funds. (See the firm's "References" page for the documented deal list.)
