Background
Tomas Hvamb is Managing Partner and co-founder of HAVN Capital, a specialist private equity firm focused on backing the service, software, and technology companies powering Europe’s energy transition. HAVN describes itself as focused on decarbonisation-enabling businesses rather than infrastructure assets, with a platform-building approach in fragmented service markets.
Before HAVN, Hvamb was a Senior Partner at EV Private Equity. EV announced in September 2022 that he and Espen Strøm had been promoted from Partner to Senior Partner; in that role, Hvamb continued to head EV’s stewardship efforts. EV said both had spent more than a decade specialising in transactions, portfolio growth strategies, and exit planning.
Earlier in his career, Hvamb worked in energy finance at Barclays in London and DNB in Oslo, covering sponsor-backed transactions across geographies. A conference bio states that he joined Energy Ventures in 2013 after five years with Barclays Bank, where he managed an oil and gas services buyout portfolio and led corporate leverage transactions.
Hvamb holds an Executive MBA in Energy Management from BI Norwegian Business School, with international components in Singapore and Paris, and a Bachelor in Applied Finance from Macquarie University in Sydney.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- HAVN Capital’s stated thesis is to invest in “the service, software, and technology companies that enable decarbonisation, not the infrastructure assets themselves.”
- The firm focuses on lower-middle-market buyout opportunities in Europe, with HAVN Capital II targeting 8 to 10 growth-stage service companies across Northern and Western Europe.
- HAVN Capital II targets companies driving renewable energy, electrification, and energy efficiency, with typical investments of €15 million to €40 million.
- HAVN’s approach is active ownership: identify fragmented service markets, partner with founders and management teams as platform anchors, execute add-on growth strategies, professionalise operations, and scale market-leading platforms.
- The firm’s sustainability framing is explicit: HAVN says it invests exclusively in companies where climate mitigation is core to the product or service, so company growth and environmental impact are structurally aligned.
