Background
Tomas Nygren is a Swedish finance executive with roughly 40 years of experience in financing and business development, spanning both the private sector and Sweden's university-linked innovation-support system. He holds a degree in business administration/economics from Uppsala University. He joined Industrifonden in 2014 as CFO, where his mandate has centered on building and developing the fund's capital and the financial and operational processes that support its investment activities.
Before Industrifonden, Nygren served as Group CFO at Almi (the Swedish state-owned business-financing group) and as Executive Vice President / Deputy CEO at Innovationsbron (a public innovation-financing body later merged into Almi). Across his career he has also held management roles and board seats at startups, listed companies, and investment firms, with sector experience concentrated in technology and life science.
In 2018, Industrifonden's board appointed Nygren interim CEO, effective April 1, 2018, to lead the fund during a leadership transition. When David Sonnek took office as CEO on June 20, 2018, Nygren returned to his regular role as CFO. More recently, in 2023 he was elected an external board member of Uppsala universitet Invest AB (UU Invest), the venture arm (founded 1995) that invests in early-stage companies built on research from Uppsala University in technology, life science, and the humanities/social sciences.
Because his function is financial leadership of an institutional fund rather than deal partnership, Nygren's public profile is that of a fund executive and board member — he is not primarily positioned or publicly documented as a founder-facing check-writer.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Operates at the fund/institutional level via Industrifonden, not as a personal angel; his role is stewarding the fund's capital rather than authoring a personal investment thesis.
- Industrifonden invests across three pillars: Deep Tech, Life Science, and Transformative Tech, targeting research- and technology-driven early-stage companies.
- Strong bias toward Nordic/Swedish companies, frequently university and research-institute spin-outs — reinforced by Nygren's own board role at UU Invest, which backs Uppsala University research.
- As an evergreen fund (~$500M), Industrifonden can take a long-term, patient-capital stance and follow winners through multiple rounds rather than being bound to a fixed fund life.
- No individually stated, quoted personal thesis from Nygren was found in public sources.
Notable Investments
- Qlik (QlikTech) — business-intelligence/data-analytics company; a landmark Industrifonden exit (IPO, later acquired).
- Oatly — Swedish oat-milk brand; scaled to a public listing.
- Clavister — network/cybersecurity company; among Industrifonden's exits.
- Freemelt — additive-manufacturing (electron-beam metal 3D printing) company; a more recent portfolio holding.
- Detail Online — e-commerce monitoring/analytics; cited among recent investments.
- Aggregate track record cited: 143 companies invested, ~18 IPOs and ~30 acquisitions across the fund's history (as reported early 2026).
