Background
Tomas Therén is a Swedish private-equity investor with roughly 25 years in the industry. He spent the bulk of his career at Procuritas, a Nordic mid-market private-equity firm focused on management buyouts (MBOs) and buy-ins (MBIs), which he joined in 2002 and where he rose to Managing Partner. During his Procuritas years he chaired and sat on the boards of several portfolio companies, including chairman of DSI and board seats at Gram Equipment, Global Scanning, and SEM AB. Before Procuritas, he worked at Bain & Company, Ericsson, and Ventshare. He holds an MSc in Industrial Engineering and Business Management.
In September 2024, Therén joined Vaaka Partners — a Finnish lower-mid-market buyout firm — as a Partner based in Stockholm, becoming the first hire in Vaaka's new Swedish office and leading the firm's expansion into the Swedish market. He had already served on Vaaka's board since 2022, which gave him an inside view of the firm's team and value-creation approach before joining operationally. Vaaka manages roughly €625m across its funds (its Buyout Fund II closed at €150m) and invests in Finnish and Swedish companies with €10–200m of revenue, targeting business services, tech-enabled services, software/SaaS, healthcare, and industrials.
Therén has also been active as an investor and board figure outside the large funds. He served as Chairperson of JNE Invest AB, a Stockholm partner-driven investment company that backed unlisted growth companies across brands, tech, and real estate (JNE Invest was declared bankrupt in 2024). He has additionally been associated with Almi Företagspartner and advisory/investment vehicles such as 5T & Company. Outside work he is an endurance-sports and outdoor enthusiast (skiing, trail running, sailing, trekking, rock climbing), with a background in endurance racing.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Control buyouts, not seed. His core practice is majority/control investments in established, profitable Nordic companies — MBOs, MBIs, and growth buyouts — with active board involvement and ~5-year holds.
- Company profile: businesses with ~€10–200m revenue (Vaaka cites ~€10–100m sales) that hold "a strong strategic position in healthy industries."
- Sectors: business services, tech-enabled services, business software/SaaS, healthcare, manufacturing/industrial, and IT.
- Geography: Finland and Sweden; his specific mandate at Vaaka is to build the firm's Swedish deal flow and presence.
- Value-creation style: hands-on active ownership — capital plus industry experience, networks, and board leadership to execute a growth plan alongside management. In his own words on joining Vaaka: *"Vaaka's strategy and team got me convinced that we have something extra to offer the Swedish market."*
