Background

Tony Eisenhut (Cornell '88) is the co-founder and Managing Director of KensaGroup, a venture creation firm he launched in 1998 (operating from 2000) alongside Cornell chemistry professor Bruce Ganem. Before Kensa, Eisenhut served as CEO of a mid-market manufacturing company and held a vice-president role at a multi-billion-dollar international retailer — operating experience he brought to the challenge of turning laboratory discoveries into companies. He holds a B.S. from Cornell University.

KensaGroup was built around a proprietary "Academic-to-Industry" (A2I™) process, a market-driven model that evaluates markets, people, and processes to determine which university research aligns with future commercial needs — rather than pursuing technology for its own sake. As Eisenhut puts it, the founders launched the firm after learning that "the commercialization process coming out of these universities wasn't efficient." Under this model the firm has evaluated more than 3,000 technologies across energy, medicine, agriculture, and other sectors, and Eisenhut has personally originated and launched roughly a dozen or more university-derived startups.

Beyond Kensa, Eisenhut is co-founder and CEO of NovaSterilis, a supercritical-CO₂ medical sterilization company he has led since 2000, and co-founder/chairman of the oat-based food brand Grainful. He has served on the boards of NovaSterilis, MedHesives, Prendismo, Novomer, and BeetNPath. In the community he has advised New York State's NextGen program, served on the board of the Center for Life Science Enterprise, and spent six years on the board of directors of Cayuga Medical Center.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Venture creation, not passive checks: Eisenhut builds companies around promising university/corporate IP rather than backing already-formed startups — creating the scientific, institutional, and financial infrastructure to move a discovery from lab to market.
  • Market-driven, not tech-driven: "Using the A2I process, we went out and looked at different university research programs to source the intellectual property and know how to meet the market." The firm starts from a commercial need and works backward to the science.
  • Chemistry-centric platforms: Focus areas cluster around chemistry and materials science with applications across biotech, sustainable chemicals, energy, medical devices, pharma, and agriculture.
  • Credibility and academic access matter: Eisenhut emphasizes partners with "international reputation for excellence… [who] know the academic process so well" — signaling that deep scientific credibility and university relationships are central to what earns a yes.
  • Long-horizon, operationally intensive: The model favors disruptive platform technologies and hands-on operating involvement (Eisenhut often takes CEO/board roles) over high-volume, arms-length seed investing.
