Background

Tony Lent has an ~30-year track record as an innovator in climate and natural-capital finance, working across both emerging and developed markets and spanning industries from community forestry in Southeast Asia to first-of-a-kind funds in sustainable fisheries and biodiversity. By his own account he has mobilized more than $2 billion into the low-carbon market transition as a principal investor and financial advisor in renewables and sustainable real assets. He holds an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley's Haas School of Business (1988–1990).

His career is a sequence of platform-building ventures. He co-founded EA Capital, an early sustainable-finance advisory, serving as Co-founder and Managing Director from roughly 1994 to 2002. In 2003 he co-founded US Renewables Group (usregroup.com), a pioneer in renewables private equity, where he was Managing Director through 2009. From 2010 to 2014 he was Senior Managing Director at the Wolfensohn Low Carbon Energy Fund. Along the way he also co-founded Javelin Capital, a renewables-focused investment bank.

In 2016 he co-founded Swift Current Energy, a leading US wind and solar developer and investor (Boston-based), which has since been acquired. In 2019 he co-founded Capital for Climate (C4C), a public-benefit company dedicated to accelerating investment into nature-based solutions and carbon removal. He also sits on the investment committee of Keeling Capital, a climate-tech fund of funds (since 2021). Through C4C he established the Brazil NbS Investment Collaborative (2022) and has curated the Brazil NbS Investment Summits (2023–2025), events he says have showcased more than $2 billion in nature-based-solutions investment opportunities.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as an angel in early/seed-stage climate ventures, drawing on decades as a renewables and sustainable-real-assets principal investor.
  • Focus areas mirror his operating expertise: low-carbon infrastructure, renewable power, nature-based solutions and carbon removal, agriculture transition, zero-carbon fuels, green chemistry, and emerging-markets financial services.
  • Describes himself as an "executive, entrepreneur, and serial platform builder with 25+ years focused on sustainability and climate-focused enterprise" who has "mobilized more than $2 billion into the low-carbon market transition" — signaling a bias toward ventures that can scale capital into real-asset and market-transition outcomes.
  • Values data and market-infrastructure plays for climate finance (his own C4C is built as a data platform for climate-focused investment), suggesting affinity for startups that make climate/NbS markets more investable.

Notable Investments

  • Net Zero Insights — Climate-tech market-intelligence / data platform (Europe-based); participated in a Seed round (~$454K) in April 2022 alongside co-investors including Chris Goodall.
  • Swift Current Energy — Co-founded 2016; US wind and solar developer/investor, since acquired (founder, not a passive angel deal).
  • Capital for Climate (C4C) — Co-founded 2019; public-benefit platform for nature-based-solutions and carbon-removal investment.
  • Keeling Capital — Climate-tech fund of funds; investment committee member (since 2021).
