Background

Earl "Trace" Devanny III is a veteran healthcare-technology executive with more than 30 years of experience scaling mid-size companies into multi-billion-dollar global healthcare corporations. He began his career at IBM, where he spent roughly 17 years and rose through multiple executive positions in the company's healthcare business, and later served as president and chief operating officer of ADAC HealthCare Information Systems. He earned a BA from Sewanee: The University of the South.

From 1999 to 2010, Devanny served as President of Cerner Corporation, the Kansas City–based health-IT company, where over an 11-year presidency he oversaw operations across 23 countries on six continents and helped drive a roughly five-fold expansion in revenue while building Cerner's global brand and footprint. In 2010 he left Cerner to become Chairman and CEO of The TriZetto Group (later TriZetto Corporation), a healthcare-payer IT provider, a role he held through 2013; during his tenure he reworked the company's business model and expanded revenue growth by more than 20 percent (TriZetto was ultimately acquired by Cognizant in 2014).

From 2014 to 2016 Devanny led Nuance Communications' Healthcare business as President, focusing on voice and language solutions for clinical documentation. In 2016 he was appointed CEO of TractManager (a provider of healthcare strategic-sourcing and compliance application suites, backed by Arsenal Capital Partners), where he integrated the MD Buyline and MediTract divisions and led acquisitions of MedApproved and Hayes Inc. plus a partnership with BidMed. TractManager was later combined into symplr. Alongside these operating roles he has served as an Operating Partner at Arsenal Capital Partners since October 2016.

Devanny has also held significant board seats: he was a director of Commerce Bancshares, Inc. (the public holding company for Commerce Bank) from 2010 until his mandatory-age retirement from the board in April 2025, a director of SelectQuote (from February 2020), and a board member of NextHealth Technologies and the McNeil Trusts.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as an individual angel and operating-partner-adjacent investor, drawing on decades of operating experience across payer and provider healthcare IT rather than a formal fund thesis.
  • Concentrates on healthcare technology — health information systems, healthcare analytics, and payer/provider software — the domains where he has operated as an executive.
  • Backs companies at the seed stage; his documented angel activity is a seed-round investment in NextHealth Technologies alongside co-investors including Point B.
  • Value-add is operational and go-to-market scaling: his track record is transforming mid-size healthcare companies into large, global businesses (Cerner, TriZetto), so he is positioned to help founders with enterprise healthcare sales, business-model design, and scaling.

Notable Investments

  • NextHealth Technologies — Denver-based healthcare analytics company (member/behavior-change analytics for payers). Devanny participated in its ~$1M seed round (2015) and served on its board; the company was acquired by Softheon in 2022.
