Background
Travis Baxter is a British media executive turned angel investor with more than 30 years of experience in consumer and electronic media. He began his career in commercial radio, presenting at Plymouth Sound from 1977 and later working at Devon Air, before moving into the BBC (BBC local radio and BBC Radio 2). He went on to spend roughly a decade as a divisional/regional Managing Director for the RTL Group across Europe until the late 1990s, and later held a senior role at the FTSE 100 media company EMAP.
Baxter joined Bauer Media (which had acquired EMAP's radio and consumer media assets) as Managing Director of local radio in 2004, becoming Managing Director responsible for strategy in 2008. He stepped down from his full-time role as radio MD in 2010 after roughly six years, transitioning into a consultancy and advisory career while remaining connected to Bauer as Consultant Content & External Affairs Director. He subsequently chaired the European Digital Radio Alliance (succeeding the BBC's Helen Boaden as Chair in 2017).
Alongside his operating career, Baxter worked in private equity as an Operating Partner with Advent International (chairing a Dutch media business and serving as a non-executive director of a major Polish company) and later as an Operating Partner at Ariadne Capital. He has taken board-level roles including Chairman of Object Matrix (a Cardiff-based media object-storage company, from 2015), and board/non-executive positions at Quill, Karnaval (a digital media business in Turkey), Slicethepie, and South West Screen, plus media advisory work for the Turkish private equity firm Actera.
Today he combines angel investing with mentoring and advisory work, notably as a Business Mentor / Investor Ambassador for the UK Business Angels Association's "Evolve" programme, which builds a connected ecosystem of investors in the UK's creative, media and entertainment sectors.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests where he has deep domain knowledge: electronic and consumer media, creative industries, and screen-based/technology-enabled content businesses — explicitly avoiding sectors he doesn't understand.
- Looks for businesses aligned with fundamental human behaviour patterns that technology enables, testing whether a product fits how people actually behave.
- Favours ventures with IP ownership and recurring revenues, and multi-layered products carrying multiple revenue streams.
- On creative industries, argues they should be treated as tangible, scalable investments: in his words, "the technology usually is tied into monetisation options" — i.e. he wants creative ideas paired with a clear technology-driven path to revenue.
- Operates primarily at the seed / early stage, bringing operating and chairman-level experience to help companies scale internationally.
