Background

T. V. Adams is a longtime Managing Director at Chapman Associates, one of the oldest middle-market M&A firms in the United States (founded in 1954, with more than 2,400 transactions closed over its history). Adams joined Chapman in 1990 and, by the firm's own account, brought more than 40 years of experience arranging deals and representing business owners. He represents Chapman across the Southeast United States and is the firm's lead specialist in the transportation and logistics industries.

Before Chapman, Adams built a career as an attorney and banker. He was in private law practice specializing in corporate and finance law for both privately owned and public corporations, and served as General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel of two large, publicly traded bank holding companies based in North Carolina. In those roles he was deeply involved in the first wave of interstate banking that swept the Southeast in the late 1980s, working on more than 30 acquisitions, mergers, and divestitures across the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee — transactions involving more than 55 banks and financial institutions and over $30 billion in assets. At his retirement from active law practice he held an "AV" rating in Martindale-Hubbell.

Adams is also an operator, not just an advisor: through most of the 1990s he was co-owner of a truckload, dry-van carrier based in the Carolinas. Under his ownership the carrier more than tripled its revenue and was ultimately sold at a significant profit to a large diversified carrier — the experience that grounds his transportation-and-logistics specialty today.

On education, Adams earned his law degree with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law in Chapel Hill, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served on the staff of the *North Carolina Law Review*. He also holds an M.Ed. in Business from East Carolina University and an A.B. with a major in Economics from Davidson College. He and his wife live in Charlotte, NC.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Role is advisory, not capital-deployment. Adams does not write checks or take angel/seed positions; as a Chapman Managing Director he represents business owners in sell-side and buy-side transactions on a success-fee basis ("M&A services without the upfront fees — we get paid to deliver results").
  • Deep sector concentration in transportation & logistics, the area he has focused on for the latter part of his career and where he has direct operating experience as a former carrier owner.
  • Financial-institution and corporate-finance pedigree — his banking-law background makes him especially suited to regulated, financially complex deals.
  • Lower-middle-market, owner-operated companies are the firm's core; Chapman emphasizes senior-level attention, confidentiality, and a relationship-driven approach, working directly with owners rather than through layers of analysts.
  • Geographic anchor in the Southeast U.S., where his deal network and banking relationships are concentrated.

Notable Investments

  • Sale of a Carolinas-based truckload dry-van carrier — a company he co-owned in the 1990s, grown to more than triple its revenue and sold at a significant profit to a large diversified carrier.
  • 30+ bank M&A transactions in his prior banking career — acquisitions, mergers, and divestitures across the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee, involving 55+ financial institutions and over $30 billion in assets.
  • Numerous lower-middle-market sale and purchase transactions completed at Chapman since 1990, concentrated in transportation and logistics.
