Background
Varun Dua was born in 1981 (raised in Mumbai) into a middle-class family. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Mumbai and a master's degree from MICA (Mudra Institute of Communications), Ahmedabad. He began his career around 2002 as a trainee at Leo Burnett Advertising, then moved into marketing roles at Tata AIG Life Insurance and Franklin Templeton Investments — early exposure to insurance and financial services that would shape his career.
Dua is a serial entrepreneur. He co-founded Glitterbug Technologies and Enser Communications before launching Coverfox in 2013, one of India's leading online insurance aggregators/broking platforms, where he served as co-founder and CEO. In 2016 he founded Acko General Insurance, one of India's first fully digital, direct-to-customer insurers — built to strip out intermediaries and rebuild insurance "plumbing" natively for the digital economy. Backers of Acko include Amazon India, General Atlantic, Accel, Elevation Capital, Ascent Capital, Binny Bansal (Flipkart co-founder), Catamaran Ventures (N.R. Narayana Murthy) and Kris Gopalakrishnan; the company has raised roughly $450–460M and reached unicorn status at a ~$1.4B valuation.
Beyond operating, Dua is an active angel investor and board member. He was appointed to Acko's board in April 2023 and also sits on the board of AckoDrive; he previously served on Coverfox's board (2013–2016). In 2023–24 he joined Shark Tank India Season 3 as an investor ("shark"), backing consumer and fintech startups on the show. His personal net worth was reported at around ₹107 crore as of 2024.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests primarily at seed/angel stage in technology-first startups, largely in India, with disclosed checks typically in the ₹1–2 crore (~$85K–$2M) range.
- Sector gravity toward fintech, insurtech, consumer internet, SaaS and healthtech — areas adjacent to his own operating experience.
- Founder-first: as an operator who rebuilt insurance from the ground up, he favors teams tackling deep structural problems in big markets. His own framing: *"If you really want to change the plumbing, you will have to start manufacturing it."*
- Has invested in ~13 companies and founded 3, per portfolio trackers, mixing personal angel deals with on-camera Shark Tank India commitments.
